err what;
the ability to pick primary and secondary weapons to spawn with, HUD-based timers for item respawns, and an automated form of (previously very skill-based) strafe jumping.
Next up: regenerating health and a cover system!

Yeah, I'm seeing the fingers of Bethesda in this.
Not that I was ever that taken with Live over vanilla Q3.

Quake Live gets pretty noobish. I am looking on the chages id soft made to QL, ruining the game with simplifying physics to make easier to bunny jump for example.

Carmack would never have allowed this.

Terrible changes. This won't bring more people to Quake Live. Scare veterans off at best.

only affects TDM really... and you still pick up weaps in maps as normal - you just get some starting ones now. ALthough I'm not sure how well balanced that'll be if someone can choose to have a rail straight off the spawn...
Apparently the autojump is just a basic "hop" rather than a proper strafe jump so presumably it can be turned off? Haven't tried it yet but some friends say it's still not as fast/maneuverable as proper straffling.

Read the full list here:

Some more changes from that post:
- No more friendly fire in TDM.
- spawn times for ammo is 5 secs and for weapons 10 in all game modes. This greatly reduces the need of weapon control in TDM.
- generic ammo boxes giving ammo for every weapon.
- A new "Heavy Machine gun" weapon, whatever that may be.
- Machine gun weapon is dropped when you get killed as ammo pickup.
- Many more noob friendly things
Also, spawning with two weapons of choice is killing the game. I've played on servers with MG plus SG or RL spawn and it ruins the game, especially the RL. It makes a freshly spawned player way too powerful.

I dunno. Played a while, last 2 days & met people I haven't seen there in a while.
Yes, they may like me have been looking.
I was surprised to see
no power-ups in the CTF Flag map Vortex Portal

new MG = not bad, especially with quad
powerup/armour countdown = dumb
loadout = super dumb
also noticed that in spite of the massive download, they removed most of the practice maps. wtf?

They're probably doing it to bring new players in with the Steam release coming soon.
Is it still possible to play the old style game mode?

So I just tried the new "start with two weapons mode". I actually think it works really well, and helps prevent you getting spawn-raped. You don't spawn with much ammo so you do still need to go find another weapon.

Apparently there's still servers running "classic mode".
