I've been looking into them as well
Brisk swears by his, though he has a G-Sync one as well

60Hz+ monitors have been around for ages and the benefits are very noticeable, especially in fps games. That said, you need the gfx power to reach those higher frame-rates your monitor supports....its a slippery slope.

If smoothness is a high priority for you check out g-sync/freesync. I have it enabled on my monitor and it allows me to play at much lower frame-rates while still looking sexy.

I've been tempted by G-sync, but does anyone make a 16:10 one yet? Last time I checked, it didn't seem to be the case.
I can't stand 16:9.

this one is my center monitor, the 144hz is a huge leap from the two 60hz's on each side.

G-Sync is incredibly expensive when I was looking at them - £700 in the UK for a tidy one

144Hz seems like a weird number? It's not divisible by 60 nor 30. Where does 144 come from?

A question to the techies here: What's the reason for the 144hz? Why not 135hz or something else?

It comes from the 24Hz that cinema runs at.

I see. But how does that make sense with computer monitors (60Hz) or PAL (25Hz)/NTSC (30Hz) TV screens?

I bought a Samsung S23A700D 120hz 3D monitor couple of years ago. The difference is night and day from a 60hz, just so much better, even just moving the mouse cursor on the desktop is noticeably smoother. Absolutely worth the difference from 60hz. Wasn't that expensive either. Mind you, it was part of a Samsung cashback deal at the time. I somehow don't think the difference from 120 to 144 would be particularly noticeable though. So depending on what you can afford, I'd say go with either 120 or 144.

There's also something called 'LightBoost' I've just discovered and not tried, but which my monitor supports. It gives zero motion blur apparently. From what I've read from gamers such as on the steam forum, (http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/s ... ?t=3222385)

a 120hz monitor with lightboost is better than a 144hz monitor. Here's some quotes and a link about lightboost.

"The difference is pretty much impossible to detect. Also if you get a 120hz and then lightboost http://www.blurbusters.com/zero-motion-blur/lightboost/
It will be better than a 144hz monitor. I'd def. get the 120hz."

"Yup that's what I got recently and the lightboost is great. There's really no need though for 144hz when you have lightboost at 120hz, which is even better."
