GM3 was released two days ago. I just started the download. I remember bunch of people from here played GM2 quite a bit, and there supposedly is an online mode now, so I see potential right there

I played the one that was on 360 a bunch way back when, 7 year ago?
was that 2? I think so, yet I seem to recall there was another one released later which had local coop.. going full DTS here.

Yeah, I used to play, but I'm kinda like Emka, I can't remember which one I played. Geometry Wars Evolved wasn't it? Anyways, let us know how it is. I enjoyed the other one...

Playing four-player Geometry Wars on a ~24" screen (projector had stopped working) is not recommended. My eyes are still bleeding.

So yeah, played it for a bit.
It's still classic Geometry Wars in many ways. In fact, there are classic game modes (Deadline, Retro Evolved, King, Pacifism, Waves) that play pretty much like Retro Evolved 2. The biggest addition is the campaign mode which lets you tackle individual levels one by one, earning you one to three stars depending on your score. Each level is unlocked in sequence, with every so-manieth level being a boss battle. The playing fields of the campaign levels are three dimensional shapes rather than the flat levels of previous Geometry Wars games, and some levels are surprisingly cool to play on. There are also a bunch of levels with holes in them (you can't fall off the level) and it creates a new dynamic in the game.
The biggest complaint I have about this game is probably that every new component it brings to the table, compared to its predecessors, feels a bit tacked on. That's not to say the mechanics don't work or aren't fun, but they feel a bit superfluous some of the time. I also have a bit of problem with seeing where new enemies spawn into the map. Previous GW games simply spawned the enemy and made them blink for half a second or so, but with GW3, there's a blurry outline of the enemy on the playing field with a beam of light streaming down onto it. Maybe it just takes a bit of getting used to, but I find myself running into freshly spawned enemies more often than I should.
If you want to know a professional's opinion though, read the
Eurogamer review. It's pretty much spot on.
