DOOM open beta

I've only played it for 2 hours but it doesn't really hook me to play more either. What do you think of DOOM so far? Liking it, disliking it? Why?
I wrote a review, it pretty much sums up what I think is wrong with it.

Note: open beta only has multiplayer, which wasn't developed by id for some reason, the campaign is done by id though.

Well... the rocket launcher is pathetically weak. Shotgun too. Movement could be a bit faster and health pickups are everywhere. Overall it's unimpressive so far unless I'm missing something. It's not horrible though. It's like a game with loads of potential but it's being stifled.

Indeed, I think if they stayed more true to the original Doom games it would've been a lot better, this doesn't feel like a Doom game at all to me.

At first I was disappointed that I missed half the open beta because I was playing the Overwatch beta on Friday and Saturday. After reading the reviews, I'm not nearly as bummed out. Still, downloading this fuckin behemoth of a beta to give it a whirl.
(Overwatch is OK. One of those games which would be much better with a regular group of friends and a few drinks)

I will delay in voting on this poll as in fairness, I have only played for a few minutes. I intend to give it some more time and before reading any (spoilers) reviews. I am looking forward to reading your review Porto.

I didn't think my computer would have an issue with Doom. I was very wrong. The main menu with just the particle effects was lagging so hard. I put the resolution as low as I could, turned off all the motion blur, chromatic aberration, etc. and the mouse was movable again / menu lag was gone.
Joined a game and it was a slideshow. Completely unplayable. :( :( :(

Mine did that - I've got a 970
Just wait as the instructions say to, and it sorts itself out

Maybe some people just hate this game... go play whatever you want :)
Im playing it on a AMD FX-4100 / 8GB-RAM / GTX960-4G @ 720p and i have a good time, its fun!
Its more fun to me then QL with all that hardcore-dudes, maybe caused by the team-modes.
I never played Q3 or QL in TDM, just FFA and or DUEL.
I like it, i will buy it and i will have fun with it!
If youre looking for a Cat -dont buy a Dog, it will never act like a Cat!
And for the Console-Dudes: Who wants to play a shooter with gamepad? Its like wanking with some heavy-duty-tools instead of your hand... Poor ones :D

It's just a shame that this dog used to be a cat and used to be the thing that defined what a cat should look like and how it should meow.

Instead, this cat barks and fetches sticks.

It's pretty much why HL3 isn't released though innit ?. These games were known for pushing the envelope, but there's nothing to really push these days

In terms of pushing graphics, there's a whole bunch of people that can do pretty much the same Carmack can do nowadays. The huge leaps and bounds in graphics we saw in the 90's is something that's never coming back, so there's just no one that can "wow" us in that aspect like Carmack did in the 90's. But the same is true for Carmack himself. He can't really push boundaries like that in 3D graphics anymore either. It has nothing to do with skill or knowledge, it's just that how much closer we get to realism, the less revolutionary new developments are. So yeah, I think that's mainly why Carmack moved over to Oculus, because VR is something that's in it's early stages and a field where huge advancements can still be made.

As for losChunk's comment, I don't think we should expect the new Doom game to push boundaries like the originals did. It's not a fair expectation. I was hoping for them to stick a bit closer to what made id Software shooters great. Instead, the new Doom appears to have been designed with a 2016 view of the gaming landscape, sacrificing all those things that made id Software's 1993-1999 games great in favor of, perhaps more sensible but certainly more modern game design. The trouble with "sensible" is that in this case it means it's supposed to appeal to a wider audience. An audience that grew up with post-WW2 Call of Duty games that simply isn't interested in the fierce and punishing gameplay of the games of yore anymore.

What I found most appaling about the new Doom was made tangible by a single shot of my rocket launcher: my opponent took the rocket straight in the face and only incurred 55 damage. When spawning with 100 health, a direct RL hit should've done 100 (or at least close to that) damage. Not for the sake of realism, but for the sake of game speed and skill demands.

In my mind, Doom was just a very flat and unexciting experience. Being limited to two weapons, having no (tactical) reasons to move around the map, players being bulletsponges, movement slower than I had hoped... it all adds up to something that really has no longevity for catering to my tastes.

Good post

I wasn't expecting anything groundbreaking because as you mentioned that just doesn't happen anymore. I wasn't sure if your comment was expecting it to redefine the wheel though. I think your spot on, like cookie cutter films the game industry is just as bad. Bland, tried and tested bullshit that will always lose it's audience to the next bland, tried and tested bullshit to be released. The industry is so fixated on broad appeal games for obvious reasons.

To make a game as brutal as Quake / Doom was, they're going to lose a lot of their casual gamers pretty quickly and with it being such a big investment from Zenimax, they're going to want a huge return. Its become too big for its own boots (imo)

Im not talkin about the graphics, the game just "feels" strange... Im ok with the look!
Now with FOV 110 it seems a bit faster and is more playable (for me)
You just have to keep your mousewheel in use to get double-fire-ratio. SSG -> Wheeldown -> Rocket -> Wheeldown -> SSG -> Wheeldown -> Rocket -> Wheeldown...
I also love the frag-grenade... Throw it behind an enemy and push him back to watch him turn into a red cloud :D
Yeah they should put some time in weap-balance! Rocket is way to weak.
And at least for me this is more fun in multiplayer than the originals. :smirk:

That's a surprisingly accurate metaphor.

Also, AndyW, have you tried the teleporter-grenade? It's probably what I liked the most about the game because it allows you to quickly teleport behind someone if used correctly or you can use it to flee from battle. It adds more speed to the game.

...so From Software churn out more and more of them on an annual basis while you only need to play two until you've had your fill :p

I agree with your core point though MKJ. Innovation has the potential to upset the apple cart, and I hope more people continue trying new things rather than pumping out the same-old, same-old every year.

The truly massive franchises tended to all start out as something different from the norm. We lose sight of that over the years as more and more games ape those ones, and those innovative franchises get monotonous through repetition and familiarity.

And then companies that are responsible for true innovation get swallowed up by bigger corporate entities. They tend to lose what made them unique in the first place as they're forced to adopt the practises of the larger corporation. Most notably here, you have Microsoft swallowing companies like Rare and Lionhead, companies once known for being some of the most inventive and innovative out there, yet a few years later all but mothballed thanks to Microsoft's homogenisation of their business practises.

I'd like to argue that new talents tend not to value their IP highly enough as well, being all too keen to sell all rights to large publishers in order to get the funding they need to make the game in the first place. This inevitably results in the slow, painful death of said IP. However, if these guys held on to their IP, chances are a lot of these games wouldn't have been made in the first place. That's a tricky act to balance, and I think it's a shame that IP laws tend to favour the holder rather than the creator.

That statement requires context though.
One of the complaints with Rage was that it was too much like a 1990's shooter with little depth and only shooting going for it. I actually liked the game for that, but other people said it was the same old thing id Software had been doing for the past two decades.
Now, with the Doom beta, we're hearing the exact same complaint, but that Doom is too much like what other companies have been doing for the past decade. I'm not pointing out hypocrisy here, but I think it's very important to see the difference between the same type of complaint about two different games.

There are exceptions to the rule otherwise I wouldn't be playing anything. Even franchises you find reliable could end up doing a 180 at some point though (Fallout 4 being the biggest example, or the biggest kick in the bollocks for me - Rome 2).
