"ZeniMax alleged that Oculus improperly used the company’s code to build the Rift VR headset"
"The Facebook-owned company Oculus has been ordered to pay half a billion dollars to the games company ZeniMax after a jury determined that the Oculus CEO, Palmer Luckey, failed to comply with a non-disclosure agreement."
"ZeniMax is the parent company of ID Software, maker of the Doom and Quake games, whose co-founder John Carmack is now the chief technology officer of Oculus. Luckey exchanged emails with Carmack, who was still at ID Software, when he was developing a prototype of the company’s flagship headset."

I believe from the trial that they determined they hadn't stole any code or R&D but got them instead for breaking the NDA and a few other things which is good news. They'll probably appeal this judgement too.

Yeah seems excessive for an NDA fine.

The article says it was Brendan Iribe (former Oculus CEO) that was fined for $150m
You sure you aren't mistaking him for John Carmack?

No it was before the judge actually ruled. I think it was in the original complaint, so maybe the jury or judge ruled that it should be Iribe rather than Carmack.

Incidentally, I had my very first experience with high quality VR today through Samsung Gear VR.
Visually I found it to be more blurry than expected, but this masked the pixally look of everything. I 'played' the "Face Your Fears" demo of a robot attacking the giant skyscraper you are in. Surprisingly, a real sense of vertigo was presenting itself through a floaty feeling in my stomach. Pretty impressive.

The most important part of that FB post is that Carmack himself writes "Id Software" with a capitalized 'i'.

That's not really a countersuite. He's suing for money that was owed to him by Zenimax for the sale of id software. Zenimax are being douchebags about it and basically just don't want to pay which is absolutely ridiculous.
Zenimax seem to be absolute assholes.

lol Samsung. I've got a zotac vr go and vibe under my desk. They are galaxies apart. If you get the chance to use a real set do it.
