i'll be honest, i haven't paid 100% attention to this story, but i haven't gotten the impression so far that the Catalan govt has the stones to turn this into a civil war

The Catalan leader has issued a defiant response to Madrid’s decision to take direct control of Catalonia, calling for “democratic opposition” to the takeover... “We must do so resisting repression and threats, without ever abandoning, at any time, civic and peaceful conduct,” he said, adding that his government did not have or want “the argument of force”.

I've kept an eye on this since the announcement of a vote and well, all I can say is Spain and the Catalan government has completely fucked up.
Catalunya needed to prove a point and they did exactly that during the time of the ref, after that they gave Spain a massive bloody nose because of the backlash that went against the Catalans, Spanish government acted cuntish by sending in what was essentially 1000s of police shipped in from Madrid to maintain 'order', who went on to attack Catalan civil servants (police / firemen) that were trying to protect the demonstrators / voters who seemed to be largely peaceful.
That created a surge in support but then they made the dipshit move of declaring independence which forced the Spanish hand in dissolving their parliament. Such a move makes it obvious that they (Catalunya government) wanted to create a shitstorm through discontent and also forced other countries (and the EU) into saying that the now independent government will not be recoignised.
In short - the vote was illegal, declaring independence was illegal, only 40% of Catalans voted (90% voted leave), 2/3rds of MPs voted for independence. What they could have used to force Spain for a legitimate vote has now turned them into a puppet state.
Also the EUs silence after the ref but before the declaration was also cuntish.
It won't dissolve into civil war imo, there maybe a sizeable portion keen to leave but there's also a sizeable portion keen to stay, the shitstorm created is by the top brass twats.

No probs, I thought this thread could do with a summary as its a bit light on info and a lot of the media seems to lean on the side of oppression, laying the blame on Spains doorstep with some on here thinking about civil war

MotoGP finale in Valencia next week. I guess that's far away enough from Catalunya but on a Spanish scale it's relatively close.
