Hmm, I've been playing for around 4 years and I still suck. :)

But most people can be better than me in much less time. But as the game is going on 6 years, the majority of the long term players are mostly pretty damn good.

Depends on how much time and effort you are willing to put into it. Of course it goes without saying that some will get better faster than others. All in all though I wouldn't think it would take very long to be decent. To get 'good' might take a while.

yeah , takes time, and depending on your reaction times, and eye/hand coordination, you might or might not ever get there. Good players probably got to that point by spending hours each night over a long period of time - and against quality oposition as well.
Online is where it is at -

Well the game i play now and been playing for 1.5 years (unreal 2 expanded multiplayer) that game you gotta have good hand eye and fast reaction time to be a good fragger (well it's like that in most games), that's not the only skill..lots of skills are needed for this game. Since i started playing my hand eye has improved tremendiously, but it's not quite at 1337 level, nor ever will.

Here are some vids of this game if you wanna see the type.

This is a game you gotta lead, just like q3...so that's probably why i don't play like a newb, the practise.

It would take about a year if you played roughly 4-5 hours each day.

Quake is as much a game of skill as of strategy. I'm not bad but I don't hold a candle against most. Strategy is a big part in most gamemodes and I'm not good at it.

practice/play against better players, accept the fact you'll get crushed to start with, like all games q3 takes time.
when i was seriously into the comp scene (ctf)we would play 5-6 hours every night then after the games we would go into irc, swap demos and pull the games apart to see how we could get better, getting to bed about 2am was considered an early night.
but now?
i cbf'ed, quit the comp scene, just play q3 single player even then i get bored 5 mins into a game, guess its to be expected seeing as ive been playing comp ctf for 4 years, and vq3 for 5

Hmm..just started playing for a few days. To be frank, I found "Hurt me plenty" is already a challenge, though "Bring it on" is no problem.
What do you think is an average difficulty?

A few hours ago I played on a Railguns only server, and I am surprise to see how people can rail so quickly and accurately, is there any trick to it?

Average difficulty? In what sense?
Great players can beat nightmare bots at Instagib, Nightmare is easily a rape-fest. People can pretty much aim as well as the hardest bots do (against other bots), but their strategies make all the difference.

I suspect that no average player has trouble beating a nightmare bot.

(edit) they probably aim so quick because of flicking, it's literally reaction rail sometimes. But it takes fking forever to do it reliably.

True, any 'good' player should be able to handle nightmare bots.

I got raped playing hardcore bots with a friend :( i still miss alot and it's annoying when someone jumps out of nowhere and kills me in 1/10ths of a second. My skills are average i think anyway, also takes me a long time to get somewhat good :( unless i'm in my zone and untouchable, but i've only had 5 games total like that with the games i've played (so luck not skill).

Playing bots is OK, but if youre really serious about getting better, don't waist time on single player, just get on a internet server that you have a decent PING, lets say around 50.

tbh the only ping I concider decent is the kind that only has 1 digit :P
Oh the joys of scandinavian connections.

Well today i had an average of 40 points in 20 minutes and one game i had 45 pts in 11 minutes, that good? my first day i had 70 pts in 15 minutes, anyway once i get good with low ping i'd move onto harder ping, i like a challenge :icon30:

I've been playing since 1999 when it came out. I played 3-4 hours daily.

And not trying to sound cocky, but I was a God. :icon19:
All it takes is dedication. I don't play anymore though.

Well just had 80+ points in 25 mins (i mostly play in servers with the most ppl)...wish i was that person who had 200+ in 29 mins :icon23: anyway it's kinda fun except when you always spawn infront of someones gun and die when you get melted :dork:

edit- man, 14 ppl in server and beat my record...80 pts in 15 mins (record was 70 in 15) finished with 90 in 20 mins for the loss. If i keep this up i'll love this game :icon31:

Currently, an average Quake 3 player can easily beat a Nightmare bot 1v1 on a tourney map.

To be good you need to work out reflexes and that can't be done overnight. Make sure you have a good mouse though like an mx510 or an mx518, thats really crucial for aim and everything else.

I've been playing Q3 for about a month and a half, I usually get 2nd-4th place, with the occasional win. In 12 player matches with a 50 frag limit I usually wind up getting 45 frags in 8 minutes or so. Over time I learned that rocket jumping actually does help which is one reason why I've gotten good so quick. I believe the trick to dominating Q3A matches is by controlling the Rocket Launcher, which I'm still learning to do but learning day by day.

Hehe, yeah, that's mainly what I play. With the occasional Tourney and less than often CTF.

don't get me wrong i used to love a good game of FFA 4-6 players were perfect, imo, but to really get good, you need to hunker down with 1 vs 1's.

It's getting harder and harder to find good Tourney servers over time. Also, I play Tourney every now and then but you can't learn much more from it compared to a regular FFA. All you learn is item and weapon control and that's it. No plain out fragging skills, just control of supplies.
