it's an xml file that live-feeds news. In firefox you can subscribe to it and put the link in your bookmark. Everytime you move that link you'll see the latest news from that feed. Nothing scary about it, I use it a lot for news. Many sites have RSS feeds these days

Because certain websites offer them.

RSS is an XML file that websites send out. News sites for an example, send out the titles and a brief description of current news articles.

so it's like a sort of automated private message thing, that tells you when new content is posted?

I use it for communicating with the programmers at work, ever since they put me on this improvement/bughunting project in the sotware they make and i have to work with. They sit something like four meters away and could easily talk to me face to face but insisted i installed this thing so they could send me updates on stuff i requested.

I'm still in doubt whether they think it's more efficient that way, or if perhaps they don't wanna see me because i annoy the shit out of them. :(

its because they have a central system where all the bugs are reported and documented, and so they can prioritize the bugs as they come in.

and cause they find you annoying, yes

Lol, it must be the purely the annoyance factor then, because we use another system for prioritising bugs.

Oh my :tear:

Piece of piss to set up a web page that reads the feeds and gives direct linkage too if you wanted to imbed it in your own web page. I did it with the BBC sports news, only takes a few lines of code.

If you use Firefox make sure you get this extension to view your RSS feeds. It's much better than the default Firefox tool.

I tried that extension and its fucking horrible. Why would I want to have to navigate through a menu, load a new tab, expand some menu items and then wait for it to display the feed? Shit in the time it takes to do that I could just GO to the actual site.

No shit...

I use Sage on Firefox -- it's basically an improvment upon Firefox's builtin live bookmark system.

It works really well.
