Apple won't switch to x86 chips. Believe me.

alot of intel users think they want osx now
thier hardware, no doubt holds, back potencial users of osx

True, but I don't see it happening. They could port Tiger to x86 systems, but what about software? All Mac software would have to be ported to the x86 version of the OS while there are already good Win32 or *nix alternatives.
edit
there's a piece about it on Slashdot right now:

they're just stabilzed after moving over to OS X, a new switch would be too much for many users

They will go public with an announcement shortly.

that would be an awesome move to have osx run on x86.
a full fledged alternative to windows would be great.
i know linux is good, but i don't think it can compare to the support of osx?

atm it is said that apple comps make up 2% of comps.
you tink thier market share increse from 2% intel ready ?hehe
intel socks are nervous today

I find it much more likely that intel will become apple's contracted provider of ppc chips
apple's contract with ibm contains some very strict minimum requirements on deliverables, and it awards apple a lot of ppc intellectual property when ibm fails to meet their promised levels of performance... so now apple can take the ppc architecture to another chip manufacturer if apple should decide that they want to do so
intel knows good and well how to manufacture chip architectures beyond x86... they already manufacture multiple risc chips for various applications, adding ppc to the mix isn't beyond the realm of reason

Intel would not make PPC chips.. They have their own reputation to uphold and building PPC chips isn't going to accomplish that

hehe its a hold

a reputation of getting clobbered by amd? heh
seriously, though, I think that the apple market is separate enough that intel providing a separate chip for a separate market would not damage the pentium brand--things would remain apples/oranges etc etc

If Intel started making PPC chips for Apple, what would that say about Intel's confidence in its own products? Not a lot...
Posted: Mon Jun 06, 2005 3:43 pm
by rgoer
it would say that different architectures suit different customers' needs, which is a fact
intel already produces non-pentium chips
the only thing hurting the pentium brand right now is how fucking awesome amd is

Does intel produce non intel branded desktop/server cpus that aren't x86, Itanium or ARM?
It's like going to the Ford plant and picking up a Chevy.. sure Ford could make a Chevy, but they're not going to

they also said that Apple was playing the AMD card at full force, so don't be too surprised if a green logo shows up on some models.

yes it is the inquirer, sometimes they are full of shit, sometimes they are bang on.

Apple are switching to intel.

no, that argument is flawed
in your comparison, ppc/x86 would not be ford/chevy... rather, apple/dell would be ford/chevy
and get this--getrag manufactures transmissions for both of them
Posted: Mon Jun 06, 2005 3:51 pm
by rgoer
yes doombrain it is true
what is still up in the air is if a switch to intel and a switch to x86 are the same thing
