Being upgraded to 2Mbit for free!

I've only just been upgraded to 1Mbit for free, and after reading of virgin net customers who have been threatening to leave because of other ISP's on 2Mbit for the same price, and who have now got the upgrade, I tried it on too. Email I got today:

" Dear Customer,

We just thought you'd like to know that your Virgin.net Broadband account has been upgraded to 2Mbps and it takes 7 days to activate the line.

Activation date for the 2mb upgrade is the 14-06-2005

Here are a few things you should be aware of:

* Your Virgin.net username, password and email address remain the same.

* This upgrade to 2 Mbps is free.

Not sure you're connecting at 2 Mbps speeds?

If you tend to keep your broadband connection on all the time, you will need to close the connection and reconnect for the speed upgrade to take effect.

If you need any further help or advice, please email us at broadbandsupport@virgin.net

Many thanks,

Virgin.net Customer Support"

Of course,. I don't know how stable it'll be. My current 1Mbit conn is very stable. But I'm aware that on my telephone line, my SNR margin ( signal to noise ratio) is very low and that has put my line attenuation at 51dB which is higher than BT's 43dB limit. I'll have to see. If not, they can downgrade me back to 1Mbit.

My conn started out at 512kbit down and 64 up, about 5 years ago, and is now at 3Mbit down, 768kbit up, at the same pricetag...

I think most ISPs just fuck their customers over... (Including mine).

honestly, you're probably losing sleep over petty crap. 1MB here and one there. i know what you're doing with your connection, but the simple fact is that once you get over that "hey, warezing is the shiznit" phase, it's really not that big of a deal.

What the feck are you on about? I'm doubling my speed, and it's not all about warezing. What's wrong with that? I' m just sharing the good news. Maybe it's not a big deal to others outside of the uk who get in excess of 900mbit connections, but to us it's a big deal. Just humour me

I started off on 2meg, then it went to 3 meg, now its at 4.

None of this changes the fact im paying twice as much for a 4meg pipe, compared to the HALF this price 8meg pipe from bulldog...

Damn 1 year contracts...

exactly what do you need that kind of bandwidth for?

Well downloadingf at approx 240kb/sec ( approx 1/4 MB per second), that sort of makes downloading things much faster. Such as, a 500 mb quake 3 movie, or, any smaller file that would have taken me a longer time to download. Such as your 50mb movie called 'jugglynoughts book of whinging 2005'. :tear:

Good to hear .

I was stuck for years with dial-up. Then I was able to get cable @ 384 up and 3meg down. With-in 6 month it went up to 512 up and 4 meg down. With-in a month from that, it went up to 1meg up and 6 meg down. All with no price increase. :icon25:

Hmm, they say they're activating it next week, yet I think my adsl status is showing 2Mbit already going by the data rate downstream of 2272kbps. But a dsl speed test is showing connection speeds of only around 480 downstream for some reason. And my SNR margin which was 9.3 has gone down to 2.7, which might be the reason. I have experienced loss of connection twice today. Maybe the 2Mbit is not gonna work well.

downstream___________upstream
SNR Margin 2.7__________23.0 dB
Line Attenuation 52.8_____ 29.0 dB
Errored Seconds 9416_____ 2
Loss of Signal 1___________ 1
Loss of Frame 0 __________ 0
CRC Errors 57640__________ 2
Data Rate 2272 ____________ 288 kbps
Latency FAST______________ FAST

I've got my 2mbits now, but I've asked my ISP to register a fault with british telecom because my SNR is down to 2.5 now,( more line noise than signal) so it's amazing I have any connection at all. It loses it every few hours and I have to reinstall the software to reconnect again. Hopefully BT will come out for free and fix whatever the problem is, which is probably the old wiring in my house.

Anyway, it's pretty cool downloading a 5mb file in about 12 seconds!
