My dog is being put down on Monday...

He's a 13 year old black lab. He's in a lot of pain, I can tell. He struggles to breathe, and his back legs give out on him a lot. The arthritis is really bad in his joints. The vet told us that labs don't really show their pain much (don't wimper or anything) compared to little dogs, so what little we can see can be assumed to only be a fraction of the pain he's in.
Last year we built a ramp leading to the back yard, because it hurt him too much to use the stairs. He doesn't even like taking the little step off the end of the ramp. Heh, he never learned how to walk on stairs one step at a time, he just bounds up/down them 2 stairs at a time in a hopping manner.
So anyway, on Monday we're taking him to the vet's office and they're going to give him a shot. They said he will fall asleep 5 minutes after the shot, so he will finally be able to really rest. My mother is out of town with relatives, and gets really emotional when talking to my father about euthanizing Jake. She said she didn't want to be around when we put him down, so dad's doing it now. He's not going to call her because he doesn't want to ruin her trip.
Here are some pictures of Jake from 2 or 3 years back, when we first moved into our new house. The first one is of him downstairs in my room (he doesn't come down here anymore, though, because of the stairs, which he's afraid of). The second one is of him in the sunroom, looking at a doggie treat in my hand.

You can obviously see the white beard he's got there. Well, there's a lot more now (on his paws, under his chin, between his eyes, etc). It looks neat if you ask me. I've never really seen a dog with a white beard.
