is there a way to check if a key is valid?

Yes, play on a 1.32 patch server and see if it lets you in. If it says 'invalid cd-key' ... well :)

Uninstall the game
Delete the rest of the Quake 3 folder that's left over after uninstall.
Reinstall the game.
APPLY THE 1.32 PATCH.

Report results...

Download md5sum and let it compute the md5 sums of your quake3.exe and the pak[0-8].pk3 files in your baseq3 dir. This way we can determine if your install is damaged. These are mine:

4484d9bd32f615ee44a9d1e5c2e4e0ec quake3.exe
73dbe2ccb82245576e2109bffee85404 baseq3/pak0.pk3
48911719d91be25adb957f2d325db4a0 baseq3/pak1.pk3
d550ce896130c47166ca44b53f8a670a baseq3/pak2.pk3

24bb1f4fcabd95f6e320c0e2f62f19ca baseq3/pak4.pk3
734dcd06d2cbc7a16432ff6697f1c5ba baseq3/pak5.pk3
873888a73055c023f6c38b8ca3f2ce05 baseq3/pak6.pk3
8fd38c53ed814b64f6ab03b5290965e4 baseq3/pak7.pk3
d8b96d429ca4a9c289071cb7e77e14d2 baseq3/pak8.pk3

Maybe someone else can do this, too, so we can compare results.

I use Linux so I just did "md5sum quake3.exe baseq3/pak?.pk3" in the Q3A folder. It won't be much different on Windows: open a shell (Start -> Run -> "cmd" or "command"), cd to the Q3A dir and run md5sum.

you're right, that's not completely true, i just ran into an "invalid cd-key" problem last night on a few servers. I bought my game back in '97 and have been using the same cd-key ever since, but because of cd-keygens and similar tools, it's bound to happen... someone probably has a copy of your cd-key somewhere.
And rzL-w- to try checking if your key is valid, you could try e-mailing ID (not that i think it will yield any results, but hey it's worth a try) your key and asking them to ensure the one you have is a valid one.

iD doesn't. They don't do anything with cd-keys actually. You could try typing /timescale 100 in the console, just before connecting. It's been known to help in quite a few cases.

Don't just give out that info. People who are not legit are not allowed to break protocol like the rest of us.

The timescale trick won't do you much good if your key isn't legit, it just gives the client a little more leeway to authenticate itself against the iD master server.
