Some noob Quake II questions

When I played Quake II, I didn't really care about binds and other options. I just wanted to play. So I'm finding myself, when revisiting the game, having to learn a bunch of stuff that I should've learned in 97. I would like to learn how to do them, if possible, in vanilla Quake II, and not an engine mod like Q2E. Here are some of those things.

How do you turn off weapon autoswitch?

Can you change the crosshair's color? I'm using a regular dot, but it's red.

Is there a way to bind the capslock key? "capslock" isn't recognized in the console as I recall.

I'm using fov 110 which automatically doesn't draw the weapon. The fire from the guns still comes from the side though, some what. Is there a way to better-center the weapons, even though they're invisible?

I'm gonna answer to the best of my Quake II knowledge. Someone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong on any of this...
  • There's no way to turn off autoswitch, and as I'm sure you know, it only switches if the weapon you pick up is stronger than the one you're currently using.
  • Can't change crosshair color either. Crosshair 1 is white, however it's not a dot, it's a cross. Crosshair 2 is the red dot, and I believe crosshair 3 is a 90 degree red angle.
  • No idea about the Caps Lock key...sorry.
  • Don't believe you can center weapons.

Why not use Quake2Max for online, it's the best port for mp. Q2E dosen't do mp at all or not very good. :paranoid:

Arguably, the best online client is R1Q2 (the official QuakeCon 2005 client). It isn't as good looking as Q2E or EGL, however.

Hmmm, I've heard about this one but I haven't tried it. Do you know if it supports usefully commands such as brightskins? I would take a client that is customizable over an eye candy client any day, but I would prefer it allowed me to customize like OSP for Q3 does. :paranoid:

Not as such. Its main strengths are the numerous bug fixes, exploit patches, anti-cheat measures and the vastly improved netcode (protocol 35). The EGL betas supposedly support it too but last time I checked, it was still rather buggy (couple of months ago).

Huh. I hadn't been keeping up with QuakeCon news so I didn't even know this existed...

And this thing can connect to regular Q2 servers?

I have been using Q2E for a long time, and vQ2. But that's it. I've not really been into Quake II that much, historically. It's good to know this is out there though. It's got some good stuff in it.

i can help u with your weapon thing... your fov is 110 you said? the default for fov is 90. set it to that and that should be fine.

I only play with 110. And, the weapon fire wouldn't be centered at 90, anyway, which was my point. :)

oh you want it centered on screen... musta missed that somehow, lol. I don't think that can be done with vanilla q2 actually. I think u can switch left hand or right hand, but I don't believe u can center it.

The only way you can center it is to play with no weapon.

Hi! :)

How do you turn off weapon autoswitch?

in Quake2 v3.20 weapon autoswitch is default off...

Is there a way to bind the capslock key? "capslock" isn't recognized in the console as I recall.

in vanilla Q2, no

I'm using fov 110 which automatically doesn't draw the weapon. The fire from the guns still comes from the side though, some what. Is there a way to better-center the weapons, even though they're invisible?

type in console hand 2
