I see that some laptops have a Radeon 9600 but only 32mb of video ram. What is that good for? Q3? Or Farcry and up?
example:
Compaq NC6000
Centrino 1,6 ghz
256 ram
40 Gig HD
cdrw/dvd Combo
Ati radeon 9600 32 meg

Compaq sucks.
If you want a gaming Laptop, you should buy one from a place the custom builds them.

256MB of RAM is pitiful. At least 512, 1GB recommended for FarCry.
Suggesting that you get more RAM, you should be able to play Q3, but not as well as you are probably used to on a modern desktop computer.
And why on earth would you want to play games on a laptop?

I wanna play games on a laptop when I got nothing to do at school
Btw, I'm looking to buy one off a private seller for around $1000 CAD, I've seen another one, a Dell with a 1.6ghz centrino, 512mb ram, 40gig, and a Radeon 9000 32mb for 1k, that good?

You were answered; Gramps and obsidian summed it up quite nicely.

A Radeon 9000 32mb and 256mb ram are gonna run games like yesterdays shit. I'm willing to bet that system would have a hard time getting a 125fps Q3 timedemo.
If you wanna play emulators/roms on it and shit, it would work great though.

Well, I have a radeon 9000 pro 128mb with a 2000+ athlon xp (desktop) and I get 173fps in q3. I was wondering if I could get similar results with a laptop which has a mobility 9000 but with 32mb. It has a much faster CPU though.

Doubtful. The video card is all but useless on that thing.

i would get a dell. they normally make very nice machines and they ship with a standard windows xp cd. the cd says dell on it but it can boot like a windows cd.
Plus you can fully customize then at the website

I've got a Siemens Fujitsu Amilo 3438 Laptop with 1,8 GHz Centrino, 1 Gig RAM and a GeForce6800 GO 256 video card. It runs FarCry and GTA SA on highest settings absolutely smooth (but have a AA problem withGTA, maybe a driver problem). Didn't try D3 yet. It set me back about €1600,-.

Get a new dell for $1000 or buy a used Compaq? This isnt a hard decision.
