Shut down

I have a friend running 2000Pro. Updated and antivirused.
It randomly shuts down for no reason. Not under load, just idling. When it does this, it just goes BAM [no actual sound] and it is off. If you try to push the power button right after this nothing happens. You have to turn off the power bar for a few seconds and then you can start with the power sswitch.
Any ideas what is happening. I have blown the case out with compresseed air as it was quite dusty.

heat would be my guess. had pc's turn off like that if there was a problem with the power or heat.
reason i say heat is because if you try and turn it on right away it wont because its still too hot and prevents it from coming back on, so you wait and then can.

Every random reboot/shutdown problem as of late ive noticed is ram timings being fucked up..
even with system that ran fine for years, suddenly need ram timings lighted up..

System doesnt feel hot.
How do you fix Ram timing? Do you mean a bad stick of Ram all of a sudden?

A bad stick of ram would do a reboot, such as an overclock would do. i cant see it shutting off the pc.
regardless if it feels hot, thats most likely it. reseat the heatsink and use some compound on it.

not nessisarly (sp) bad, just the ram finally saying "FUCK OFF WITH THOSE TIGHT TIMINGS BITCH"..

Right but thats only really a concern if a person has been playing with those timings in the BIOS. The most common reason for complete shutdowns is a faulty power supply. Faulty and/or overclocked RAM usually causes a reboot rather than a shutdown.

Could be as simple as your power bar too. If the breakers cut off the power, you have to reset it, often by hitting the reset or power switch... which would explain why it only works when you reset the power bar.

untrue..

Actually its quite true. If RAM won't function under the manufacturers own timing settings its faulty and can be returned :icon27:

Right, and "manufacturers" timings arnt always AUTO DETECTED correctly in bios, and MOST people let it set "by speed" in bios..

That is a possibility. Not an incredibly common one in my experience but a possibility nonetheless.

I hooked up a new power supply, but it still happens. The machine will start fine but now it reboots rather than shutting off completely.
And as it reboots, there is a tick tick [2 of them] sound from inside the case somewhere.
The ticking was actually an old sound card in the case.
Changed the Ram everything, still keeps rebooting. Gets to press DEL to enter setup and then just reboots. over and over

ITS A HEAT ISSUE, SO YOU SHOULD PROBABLY RESEAT THE HEATSINK AND BE DONE WITH IT.
