Hi guys. I'm doing a reinstall for a friend and after I formatted and reinstalled '98 SE, I get this message on reboot.

C:\WINDOWS\system\vmm32.vxd: Missing/unable to load.

This is a completely clean install of '98 SE [valid copy]. First reboot after finishing install.

tried the second link and this is what happens.

Have to boot into safe mode to run command prompt as I cant boot normally.

command prompt comes up saying C:\windows>

type in : dir vmm32.vxd /s and get this:

directory of C:\windows\system

vmm32 vxd 941,000 date/time vmm32.vxd
1 file(s) 941,000 bytes

Total files listed:

1 file 941,000 bytes
0 dir 12,125.36 MB free

C:\windows>

now on step 2 when I type cd windows, it says
invalid directory

type
cd\
then try again

your in windows dir so changing to it is not needed

it seems to me your system folder and vmm file are fine

In safe mode, I looked at the autoexec.bat and it is empty. When I click on edit, nothing happens.

Also the winstart.bat file is empty.

How do I edit the autoexec.bat if need be to put something in there.
