CD Rom cable

You know inside the case where there is a cable from the cdrom to a plugin on the motherboard. What, exactly does thsi cable do?
Is it just for direct sound from that cdrom?

Yes, it allows sound to be output directly to your soundcard.

You can playback a CD without using CPU cycles since it outputs directly to the soundcard.
