I only have one on the net at any time, and they are not networked to eachother - can I use the same cd key or do I need to get another copy of the game? I play on pb servers almost exclusively

No problem as long as you don't play at the same time i guess.

But aren't you saying you have 2 copies of quake3 with only 1 cd-key?

Meaning you bought only one game and don't own the second instance that is installed on another system>?

Topic closed? :)

I have 2 myself but I was just pointing out the obvious. Not trying to be an ass or anything to S@M.

lols are you pulling my leg here
I have one copy of q3, hence 1 cd key - is it legit to have that same copy of q3 and same cd key on my second machine? I only have one machine networked at a time, and play on pure servers - just dont want a guid ban or anything like that to occurr.

I'm legit and not trying to be a jerk.

But.... I do believe you can only have one instance of the game installed
anywhere at one time if you want to get down to the point.

The way you asked really is border-line for closing the topic ( my opinion ).

I guess I'm just in the minority. :icon26:

I was asking for clarity and you want to regulate a legitimate question??? clearly u think even asking is wrong. I did think you were pulling my leg, but okay.

If I said I was double using the one copy and described how others could also do that, etc then yeah, and if that was a breach of copyright the thread should be closed; instead I was seeking info on how to make sure I stay legit - a big difference IMHO. Its like teh question of buying a music cd, and seeking opinion on if its legit to add it to ones mp3 collection. Anyhow, thats my view. I'll stay with one instance per copy to stay safe, and read through the T&C again.

I've seen a bunch of duplicate key people try to connect to ap longue (server I play at)... you won't get your guid banned, it's just a 5-10 min. kick

S@M: it depends on the settings of the server. Servers with sv_strictauth 1 probably will not allow two clients with the same key and most PB servers won't either, but PB can be configured to allow duplicate (or empty) keys. You can play with duplicate cd-keys in all pre-1.32 servers though (still quite some ppl playing 1.30 and 1.31). Just get the 1.30 and 1.31 quake3.exe or get a q3 version switcher (i set up my favorites in ASE to use a custom config that points to the right version of quake3.exe). There is no danger at all of getting a global GUID ban.

So there are plenty of opportunities to have two ppl playing with the same cd-key, on two different servers or even the same server.

um thanks oeloe, but that is exactly NOT what I want. I have one copy of q3 for me, anyone else wants it they can pay for their own. Am i this hard to understand really????
Now this thread could be locked IMO.

I totally read the subject and your topic wrong.

I pm'd a mod earlier about this topic and didn't get a reply back so I went ahead and replied my last reply to this yesterday.

That's ok. It's a perfectly Good discussion
you have every right to have two instances of the game installed using the one cd-key. Yeah.

Piece,
how bout u get a mod in here, seems nothing less will make u happy. Hey how about getting me a ban as well as locking the topic,
yeah that will teach me to ask about a game on a games forum.
I'll say no more because I know your level of commitment to q3 is high. Have the last say or take it further, whatever u want man.

As I said above:

The following was a Private message I sent yesterday.
PieceMaker PM'ing a MOD wrote:Subject: S@M's topic about one copy of q3 - two computers
Let me know if you think I'm being a little too anal about this.

Or if I'm way off base?

After a few responses to my reading your whole topic and subject wrong I then sent another Private Message to the same mod stating:
PieceMaker PM'ing a MOD wrote:Subject: Nevermind man :)
I must of read it wrong and everyone just agreed.

No worries.

:D
I was giving my opinion on what I thought about your topic and subject.

If you can get over all this. Fine. Again. It was my opinion what I stated above.

Everyone else in this thread has a totally different view so get on with your topic and quit crying about me. I am over it. :icon25:

okay,
ps: ya big goof :)

edit: appols owed perhaps to you piece. I found the following:

4. Permitted Copying. You may make only the following copies of the Software: (i) you may copy the Software from the CD ROM which you purchase onto your computer hard drive; (ii) you may copy the Software from your computer hard drive into your computer RAM; and (iii) you may make one (1) "back up" or archival copy of the Software on one (1) hard disk.

damit why didnt I check on the cd first - this info was not available via their website, or any other website I could find :(
