Quake 3 patch 1.32

I currently run on a Macintosh running the operating system OSX 10.3.9. I just downloaded the upgrade for Quake 3 and I have installed it but my problem is that the new upgrade just creashes and quits. It originally asked me to point the new upgrade to the original file, which I did, which started the crashing. I went through and deleted all of my old quake 3 files and reinstalled the original install via OS 9 and re-upgraded the game. I now show in my finder that original dates on the original install (back in 2003) and it still just crashes and doesn't ask to re-point to the original file.
Any help on this matter would be really appreciated.

Can you get to a menu at all, does it quit to the finder, or does it crash and make you force-quit it?
It just quits

I also tried to copy pak0.pk3 from the disk to my harddrive, but it says it cannot be done because some of the file pak0.pk3 is not "read or written"

I had no problem whatsoever copying pak0.pk3 from my Mac Quake III Arena CD to my HD.

At risk of sounding daft - are you logged into the Mac with administrators privileges (I had a problem with copying the pak0.pk3 file due to this).
Have you repaired & verified disc permissions after removing & reinstalling the software ?

In OS X 10.4 you should be able to authorize the replacement of the pak0.pk3 file when it gives you the "not read or writeable" error.
And BTW, I guarantee you these problems are occuring because the pak0.pk3 file is not readable.
