Hi, newbie here

Just bought quake III gold today, after my cousin bought it i decided to get in on the fun. But I can't seem to connect and play online!

Heres the thing. My cousin had already bought the game, used Key on his pc and played online. Later I took the game to my computer and installed and was online playing with same key. Next day I couldnt get online at all (see any quake rooms) i thought this was just because 2 of the same key couldnt be used and my cousin might have already been online.

So I bought my own copy of the game, uninstalled my cousins copy completely, then installed my copy. It is all installed correctly but On both Quake III and Team arena when i go to multiplayer. I just get the same message: No Responce from master server. and no matter what. No rooms are displayed!

I have NTL Broadband at 300k. Can someone tell me why I can't play online? Many thanks!

Get the All Seeing Eye because the ingame server sucks.
I'm guessing you won't have the latest 1.32 point release yet, which is mostly played, so get it here
Thirdly my favourite popular mod OSP, can be collected here (though the site seems to be down at the moment )

i did..

ok i have the all seeing eye, but i dont know how to use it with the game. the all seeing eye opens up as a program resembling kazaa. but i dont know how to make it run with the game. Or how to get the game to detect the all seeing eye. Please Help.

let me help with some handy screenies then

1. When you open ASE you will have a blank screen like the one below:

2.Then you must click on the 'Quake 3 Arena' button on the left, and click the refresh button, shown on the picture below:

and then as you can see loads of servers should show up.

3. To connect to one, you can either double click, or right click like so:

4. If you would like to change the name you use to connect the selected server, click the button shown below:

5. A box should pop up, now click on the games tab and 'Quake 3 Arena'. Then obviously the 'Player Name' field.

Well something changed. before when i clicked a room, the game just opeded up and nothing was different. I've done all you said to, and i can click a room now but something isnt right. Rather than just be sent right into battle i'm taken to a loading screen with the message

Thats all get - Where i've maked a # symbol is where the number starts at 1 then just keeps going. I thought this was a battle/room loading but it just keeps on going, i let it go well past 100! then if I escape i'm just asked for my licence key then its back to the main title screen menu....any ideas?

That is normal, the 'long random number' as you call it, is the ip of the server.

The 'Server Uses Protocol Version 68' is because you are using the wrong version, as i said you have to get the latest version 1.32.
To check which version the server is before you enter, look in the bottom right of ASE, and scroll down in the small box, the last bar of information is the version.
Just to help:

If it does not say 1.32 or 1.32b, then it will not work, you will get the error.

After saying Awaiting Connection, it should go on to say Awaiting Gamestate, and then connect. Try everything i've said above, then if it still doesn't connect make sure you are not behind any firewall that may be stopping Q3 connecting to the server.
This should work.. i can't think of anything else that could go wrong, except making sure you arent trying to connect to a mod you don't have.

what firewall could be blocking me (if thats a possibility) and how do i get the latest version of ase? at the moment even if i choose the rooms with the version numer you mentioned i get the same error screen i mentioned. thanks for helpin

You need te latest version of quake 3 CLICK HERE http://www.planetquake3.net/download.ph ... load&cid=3

After installed, use All seeign eye how Crinkley said, and it should work fine.

I cant get the latest version. If i click to get the latest version I'm taken to a bunch of mirrors. Clicking each one takes you back to the home page of that site. can someone send me this update?

Ok, I'm now able to play online, but there are still many problems I need help with. These problems come up alot :

My CD key is 'Invalid' and I seem to have to enter it all the time

If i make changes to my character, name or resolution it doesnt rememer them when i connect to a room.

I can't seem to connect to 'any' rooms in team arena.

when rooms are displyed in quake 3 i can only view so many, the scrool up and down arrows are completely disabled. Cause by punk buster?

In rooms, when people chat, it is causing my controls to go insane! i'm suddenly looking at the ceiling, using items, and firing rapidly whenever someone sends a message.

and i just generally can only connect to about one in twenty rooms.

there are other things but these are the biggest problems. Can someone help me fix them all for good? Thanks

PS dont just tell me to download this and that, you'll have to give me the actualy links to the software or the software itself, alot of the time the links just lead to dead mirrors. Many thanks!!

You'll have to be willing to put in some effort to help resolve your own issue (like looking for something as simple as live mirrors) or you're not going to get much help.

what i mean is i've been given links to the stuff i need but it just brings me to the home page of a site with a search engine, i'll type what i'm looking for there and it'll take me away from that site i was given in the 1st place. Downloading something from quake 3 world, I was given the link which took me to a selection of mirrors at this site, the rest had the problem above and one mirror was for this site, which when clicked just took me back to the overall download page. I'm really struggling with quake so i need all the help i can get. I do try all the mirrors on every link i'm given but they all seem to be expired or lead backward.

Should I realy have had to explain myself to someone called Tormentius?

Thanks for the link, i'll get that in now. Ok I've just been using the all seeing eye and there must still be something not right. I got into about 1 in 60 rooms. It cant loads maps, server uses protocol #, and some other random errors. Also, when i make any changes to my settings they're never remembered. With the all seeing eye, i'm still using the same name i had 3 names ago! it wont remember changes to controls or anything (no matter how many times i change them. I'm totally new to this and i'm getting really fed up with all the shit you have to go through. I didnt think you'd have to be Bill Gates to enjoy online gaming.

Ok, I've still to try The Quake point release which I got from axbaby. (thanks for that link btw axbaby!) I'll get on that tomorrow, again thanks to all for help. Any probs I know where to come :icon31:

Hey again. ok, I had a bit of a breakthrough. I was recommended to switch back to version 1.31 and it works fine. Ok maybe not exactly perfect but a million times better than the 1.32 (newest version) Thanks to the person who told me to download Quake 3 Version switch, it was that which did the trick. I'm not sure who it was who told me here to get Q3VS (must have been in a removed post) But thanks to that person all the same! I'd just like to know if theres a Version switch available for Quake 3 Team areana? Since version switch, Q3TA is empty but the rooms never worked anyway. Any ideas? thanks!

Nobody plays TA online anymore. Don't bother with it.

In order to start playing, first you must update the game with the latest patch, Point Release 1.32. This update includes up-to-date game fixes as well as PunkBuster, Anti-Cheat software used to prevent online cheating.

In order to join PunkBuster enabled servers you must type "/pb_cl_enable" in the console (press the tilde key: ~ on your keyboard to open the console while in-game). In addition, you should enter "/pb_sleep 500" and "/pb_system 1" in the console in order to reduce any slowdown or stuttering due to PunkBuster's scanning.

Afterwords, you should download PBWEB.exe, which will allow you to manually update PunkBuster. Place the file in your "Quake III Arena\pb" directory and launch the executable. It will take a few minutes for it to update, be patient.

Next, Download and install All-Seeing Eye to browse for game servers. While not necessary, ASE is far superior to the in-game browser, therefore I suggest you use it. Open the All-Seeing Eye program. In ASE, under the Game column, you'll find what mod the server is running. Baseq3 refers to a server running w/o any modifications. If you don't have the mod that the server is running you'll have to download it (use google to locate mod developers website and the corresponding mod files). Rocket Arena 3, Threewave, OSP, DeFraG, CPMA and Urban Terror are some of the more popular mods, just to name a few.

In addition, you may find servers running maps you do not have (indicated by their red color in ASE). You can either turn automatic downloading of missing files on by typing "/cl_allowDownload 1" in the console or finding the map via Google. Some of the more popular maps are ztn3tourney1, hub3aeroq3, cos1_beta7b, along with the Threewave CTF and CPMA map packs. You can find even more custom-made maps at LvLworld.
