What would you do?

I noted 3 out of 7 networks in my area are unsecured. I already connected to one and downloaded some system updates, but I feel bad because I know it's ethically wrong.

So i'm not sure if I should inform these people some how or simply make use of their stupidity to setup a torrent server/download station using their wifi. Cunty I know, but... it's like they want me to do it...

Ethically wrong?

Scenarios:
1. They use their internet connection so little that they never notice you using their connection. Result you get internet access, they suffer none.
2. They notice someone using their wireless without permission. Result they look into how it happens and fix the problem

There are 2 issues that could arise:

1. They could have a bandwidth cap and you could end up costing them a lot of money on their connection bill. The solution to this is to check their ISP (if you can connect through it you can look up the ISP from the IP address). If they're on metered access, leave it alone

2. You download copyrighted material and get them in trouble. Stick to legitimate media. It's not as if there's a shortage.

Leave them, you never know when you might need a backup link when yours fails.

So I think what I'm gonna do is setup Bitcomet on my notebook and have it download files to my server 24/7 keeping my conn free of latency and traffic.

I did that already a long time ago. I noticed a woman with her Win98 box shared off (C drive shared with full permissions) over her wireless. I felt bad for her so I added her printer and printed off a nice little tutorial I wrote up on how to lock down your firewall with WEP security. I took my wifi network offline shortly after so I dunno what the outcome was.

3 out of 7? Doesn't that strike anyone as kindof an odd statistic? I could understand 3 out of 6 or 50% but 7?

i hate to agree with Blood.Fart, but leave them be in case you need to use one some day.

WEP's pretty weak, but at least those guys have something rolling around in their cranial turrets.

I can always pick up mine (which is MAC and WEP protected). Every once in a while two unprotected ones show up. I connected to one once but then felt dirty :/.

Any reason why they would pop up at different times and not be constant? Other than the owner turning everything off when they aren't using their computer?

I cant get online via a USB hooked up to the think (WHY SONY???), and I dont have wireless in my house.

So every time i search for locations, I find loads, but all with WEP or some other security (SEblah blah something or another).

So why isn't security standard on this wireless interweb stuff?

it is standard, but manufacturers make it impossible for your average joe to enable it since most wizards don't even ask if you want to set it up or not. these include: dlink, netgear and linksys. i've set up each of these in the past 3 months though, so maybe some have changed, but i doubt it.

All of the above manufacturers have products which do enable wep as part of the wizard. However this was not present on older kit for many wireless manufacturers.

Probably doesn't work on 1.51 and over, not a lot does. I upgraded to 2.0 for the time being because i get a new one soon (7 dead pixels, weee!!) so i'll be back down to 1.52 soon... That doesn't make a HUGE bit of difference, because there isn't anything that works on 1.52 either, lol...

I only upgraded because a) its only for a week or so, so i can check it and b) its easier than hacking wipeout pure every time i want to go online.
