is there a trick to getting shit to load faster? my machine hangs at the 'verifying client data' stage while joining a server for about 1-2 minutes. It is annoying as hell. I know the game is a system hog, but i didn't expect this. my system is -

amd64 3500+ 939
1 gig of corsair xms ram
bfg 6800gt oc
asus a8v mobo

could it be a hd data transfer issue? i have an old shitty drive....but i don't think that would be the bottleneck here...

or does it just take this long for everyone?

What kind of hard drives are you using for your OS and game install drive (SATA or IDE)?

SATA is not gonna solve this problem.

Didn't odium say another gig of RAM helped him?

Have you timed it or it just seems like 1-2 minutes at "Verifying...?"

Because my whole system is lower than yours (same amount of RAM though) and that part only takes like 10-15 seconds.

I do have a good hard drive... (Seagate 7200.7 8MB cache & SATA)

That's Punkbuster verifying your client data, it's not gonna go any faster perhaps unless you get a 10000 RPM Raptor HDD.

I installed a new Sata 250gb 16mb cache and that knocked about 5 min wait off my time. Last night I installed another 1gb pc3200 ( up tp 2gb now) and it takes about 45 sec to load and play and no jitters when it spawns me now.

i heard miracles happen when you get those 15k rpm raptors

I thought they were 10K RPM. You mean some SCSI drive?

I think a 1gb + will help the load time.

If you have a dual monitor setup you could try loading the windows task manager on one and watching the performance tab while the levels load.

If I had to guess I would say the problem lies with PB checking your loaded files, and part of your loaded files not being in RAM, but being in the page file/still on the disc.

To solve this you could get more RAM, or (cheaper if your mobo supports it) get a second identical hard drive and run a RAID Stripe. This will almost double your HD performance.

BF2 is poorly coded and requires 2 GB+ of ram to functions correctly.

my hd is an OLD drive, something like 10 gigs or thereabouts. storage space has never been an issue for me, since I just use the machine for gaming and never have more than 1-2 games installed at once, but I'm really thinking that what you mentioned is spot on . i'm going to get an SATA drive and order another gig of ram methinks.

You should get a new drive just for the extra storage....sheesh. Can't believe you are at 10 gigs with the rest of your system being a good setup. Also you don't need to get another full gig of memory. Another 512 added with the gig you already have will do the trick if you want to save money. If you have the money than get another gig by all means. Try to make it the same manufacturer on the memory as what you already have.

By the way that slow down you're getting does seem to point to both the memory and the HDD. It's checking your files that are sitting in memory and in your virtual memory. If those aren't large enough, you'll have to sit through a bit of file swapping.

thx poo.

as for the storage issue, again, it really has never been an issue. I am playing maybe 1 or 2 games at a time, max, and am not one who goes back and plays games I have already finished much. This machine is used for nothing else. My laptops provide all the storage I need for everything else.

but yea, the drive is comparatively ghetto compared to the rest of the system, no doubt.
