have you guys ever got together as a comunity and made 1 large fucker of a decent map? :)
It would most likely be hard to work on it as such a big group but i thought since most of you are ace at mapping the result should be great.

Don't wonder. You're not good at it.

There are some cooperatively made maps. I remember a RA3 map and some other maps (all game radio (agr.pk3)?).

iirc, there have been two 'pass the map' maps, not exactly co-operatively made (each mapper had the map for a certain amount of time and then passed it on to the next guy) but that's about as close as you'll get without some form of 'proper' organization on a project like that.

It's actually an interesting idea IMO, and one I've thought about before. As you add more people to a creative design process, it becomes exponentially more complicated. Two people collaborating isn't too tough. Five is hard. Ten? Twenty? A potentially gigantic pain in the ass.

If it were to be an actual collaborative project involving many people, and not just a "pass-the-map", then Kat's right--communication and organization would be the biggest hurdle to tackle. At the very least, an irc channel and regular meetings therein would be necessary if everyone were to share equally in the creation process.

And the arguments would probably be legendary. :)

Is there a link anywhere to those PTM efforts? I don't remember them actually being released?! :paranoid:

The people over at Map-Center have tried something similar (several times, even) but nothing good came from it.

True, some mappers have awesome gameplay but not a very good appearance where as some have an artist's touch but no feeling of flow.

The best I've seen the PTM concept work was in one of the early PTM attempts where there was a pre-determined and limited amount of space for each mapper to decorate his own "room". Estentially the project just boiled down to asthetics, as gameplay inherently became non-existant, and imo, unnecessary for a "fun map" like that.

These sprawling PTM map projects where each mapper is allowed to add as much as he/she wants without consquence usually end up in the "unfinished" pile. Nobody wants to come back in and clean up a 4092x4092 space that the previous mapper started.

Yea, I would like to see that too...
For a while ago, I thought it would be cool if someone had a solid design, and then other people could make different themes built upon that map, and there could be many versions but they all looked different, I think it could have been very cool.

Great idea..

BTW, q3w had a collaborative mapping competition a few years ago, which apperantly no one except for about 3 groups ever got around to finishing. The contest fell apart for some reason, but there were a few decent efforts that came out of it, including this one by myself and Cremator:

(Now known better as ra3map15)

And this one by Jax_Gator and Lord Squart:

I believe there was a 3rd entry but I cant remember the name of it, or who made it.
