Back to the desktop. Put in a new hard drive since none of the copies of windows i have would wipe it. Also got a new copy of windows just because. So i install all the drivers i have (sound, video, kbd/mouse) and I still can't get the damn thing to recognize the motherboards ethernet port.

How on earth do I get this damn thing to recognize the port and connect to my network? It's been out of use for over 5 months because of that worm that screwed it up the first time.

The ethernet controller might have to be installed from the disk the mobo came with.

I used to scratch my head as well at the fact that an installation of any Windows version past 98 (when Microsoft focused on networked OS interfaces...especially NT) doesn't automagically configure the fucking thing by default.

But yeah...it's a mobo thing.

It's this mobo, http://www.ecs.com.tw/ECSWebSite/Produc ... 44&LanID=9

Thanks for the info I'll work on it tonight, figured it would be a mobo driver problem but didn't want it to be that since they are hard to find. The ones on that site are just for the onboard video and audio... boooooooo

Also check the BIOS to make sure that you actually have the controller enabled. I know on my mobo there are options to turn off certain controllers like ethernet, audio, hdd/parallel, etc.

Okay so there aren't any lan drivers that I can find and in the BIOS setup the ethernet port has the option of 'auto' or 'disable'. It was already set to auto and it still don't work.

So in Device Manager, does it say that it's an unrecognized device or does it say it's okay but you're still not getting a connection to internet/network?

It looks like a Marvell controller. If you can confirm this, try downloading a driver for it here:
http://www.marvell.com/drivers/

Thanks but it didn't work... I'm going to go get a separate NIC.

I look at it like this: time = money. The more time I spend trying to fix it, the more money i save. The more money I spend, the more time I save. I would rather save time than money when I am this close to getting my desktop back in action :)

True that. $10 and you should be set. Though I'm not sure why you ended up with some mobo from some no-name brand. I have a hard time trusting their products and support.

$10 later, I'm on the internet getting this thing back up to speed!! yay
The mobo was part of a list to choose from on the builders site. I know I know, build your own... I probably could but have never done it before.

How nerdy is it to have it feel good to use a keyboard again instead of the laptop? lol

edit: edited from desktop yayyyyy

If you can slap in a network card, you can build your own. All you need is a screwdriver (sometimes you don't even need that) and some thermal paste. Oh well, at least it "works" now. \o/

Next one I do I'll build my own. yeah i've changed out mobo's, power supply's, graphics cards, ram, peripherals, hdd's, cd drives, well looks like everything that makes up a computer before so in a way i kind of have built a computer or two.

now the transfer of files from the laptop

wow already see one problem... on the laptop (old computer) for the file and transfer wizard, it has the option to use a home network to transfer everything and on the desktop (new) it does not...

nm it's going

Jesus H I just can't win with this thing.... it got some sort of virus on it damn near immediately. It was some sort of Windows Security Virus that kept popping up. Then in firefox, every link i clicked would go to a generic search engine result page. Then I downloaded a malware scanner and installed it, but then it wouldn't open. So f it, formatted disk and reinstalling windows. First program to be installed will be my firewall software.

Also that same virus that got on the desktop found it's way to the laptop but the malware remover got rid of it after two scans and two restarts.
