So for Quake3, even today, CRT's are smoother than the best TFT's, maybe due to the refresh rates capped at ~75hz on TFT. Maybe also due to the high fps (125) that Q3 uses. I'm not sure, all I know is they are.

So now Quake4 is out, the pace is the same but the engine is different, lower fps(60fps max?), so maybe the higher refresh rates aren't needed anymore, or are they? Is CRT still king? 60fps@120hz sounds smooth.

Also whilst we're talking about displays, is there an optimal resolution? (for aiming).

I would say 1024x768 is the best resolution to play at for most fps games.

Some ppl say the pros stick to 800x600 for a better effective mouse resolution. I can't imagine ppl with fov 120 or up use 800x600 though, because you can't see anything at larger distances. I'm playing Q3 at 1152x864@100 Hz currently at a very nice CRT, but i might switch to 1024x786, perhaps with 4xAA enabled.

I play online games at 800x600 for 2 reasons: I want the best performance possible, (could give a rats ass about eye candy) and I want the best refresh rate my monitor can support.

The real question is can your video card offer 100% playable performance at an LCD's native resolution?

A high quality 16ms monitor wont have ghosting, or at least not enough to really notice. I think a lot that claim 8ms are little better than 16ms.

Yes, that is more than enough. Things to consider: Manufacturers all have different specs, so one lcd monitor with 12ms might feel a lot better than a 12ms brand from a different company. People here have reported that even 16ms with good lcd's is fine for games. That is, the better/more expensive brands perform better.

If you check reviews at sites such as newegg, you'll see that Dell makes excellent lcd displays. People from this forum swear by them too. A while ago they had a rebate coupon for like 20-30% off and that thing went fast as fuck. They might have a rebate like that again though.

I have a Sony XBRITE LCD monitor with an advertised 8ms response time, and I've never had a hint of ghosting. The monitor has some light sensor that is supposed to auto-adjust the brightness and whatnot for the ambient light..but I haven't noticed it do much in that way.

Isn't that the idea? :p

Sounds like a cool feature, though. I might keep that in mind when I actually start shopping for an LCD.

I'll let you know how it looks on my 20" widescreen LCD when I get it - if Nightshade doesn't beat me to it.
