I have a 1GHz linux box that can handle a 6 player doom3. I would hazard a guess that q4 ded server is similar, although I haven't tried it yet.

edit for clarity: haven't put q4 on that 1GHz box yet...

A linux machine can handle quite a bit. A Windows machine -- well I wouldn't imagine using Windows for a game server. :dork:

Seriously. It was only for the game server reason that I got into linux at all. Now I use it for many functions (at work and home)

You'll get more users, better performance. After I built one, I was hooked.

I'll bet 14 players is ambitious for a win2k3 box with 512M. I'm guessing you'll get 4 players before you start to page. But I'm totally just guesstimating.

As far as bandwidth, I think a clean T-1 could host 14 players. ~100-150k per user (ish) was a d3 planning number some used, and q4 in theory should require less b/w.

I'm hosting 3xq3 ded (14slots), 2xq4(14slots), ftp, TS on:
barton 2500+ (1,86ghz 512l2)
1gb of superb quality ddr400
2xsata160 7200rpm on raid stripping

Never had any problems with any of the games with max peaks, example (for my serv.):
q3 10/14, q3 4/14, q3 4/14, q4 6/14, q4 2/14.
Hunkmegs on all q3 servers is 128mb.
It just all works smooth.
Fedora Core 4 distro.

yea riddla anything above 1ghz would be best for a server. 2ghz would be a killer server on a T1.
