Just means that now the source engine is working for 360, games can be made using it...?

Not a lot really.

No odium, it does not 'just' mean that.

Releasing source middleware on xbox360 means:
* Current source projects trivial to port to xbox360 (in dougs own words "usually just a recompile." then any interface tweaking as needed)
* Multiplayer interaction between the same title running on 360 and PC platforms. And without hacking it together, either. It'd just be there.
* looking forwards, this enables mod community support for any title existing on both platforms.

It's a significant development.

This is just another part of Valve's very wise push into developing a ubiquitous pseudo-platform on which games can be developed and played on multiple platforms. The groundwork for this was the development of Steam itself into a centralised system for managing, updating and playing many games on multiple engines and connecting many players into one system. Second was opening the technology as a service and setting rates reasonably so as to encourage in 'garage' development and other design houses.

Porting it to the 360 is the first of I would guess multiple links in the chain. Just consider that if they also repeat this for the PS3 or even the Wii (hey, who knows.. maybe it could run HL2) then they'll pretty much make gaming history as the company which broke the mould of consoles being insular platforms.

Dropped loads since coming back from uni. Put a little bit of muscle on but not much, as my bench is still trapped in the garage roof with no space to set up.

*Trys to change the subject*

This should be interesting, but the question is if microsoft will allow UserBased Submissions to add along with the source engine.

i.e. is some guy makes a WW2 mod, could he say upload it to the marketplace and get people to download it and play on some servers?

if that is possible it will do as much good as it did on the computer ( i.e. take a look at counter-strike.. it started off as 3-4 guys just trying to do something diffrent. )

Meh, it should be interesting to see how this unfolds.

I don't think a mod is cross-platform compatible without a recompile with a new SDK. Also, I don't see how a (unofficial) mod would be distributed unless the general public gets to upload their files to the XBox live store or whatever it's called.

Not too sure about MP compatibility either. Technically it should be possible, but unless XBox Live becomes accessible for PC users it probably won't be done. Then there's still the chance of them not doing it. We all know how the PC Quake 3 players ruined MP for the Dreamcast players.

It's interesting news though.
