That is incredible...those prices dropping on those so consumers can use to make near anything.

Might put out of business some of the model makers.

how much does the material that these use cost, i imagine its gonna be quite steep. wont be long before some genius makes a gun and the whole thing gets some serious regulation...

but fuck yeah, one step closer to a rl replicator :D

No, it's resin. You buy it as a liquid and it cures into a solid.

Everything I'm working on at the moment has been grown using this tech and then re-cast in more durable plastics, it's incredible. The detail and accuracy (in the professional machines) is of a level that you just simply can't achieve with traditional model making in the same timeframe, it's truly revolutionary stuff and the unfortunate reason I'm slowly and painfully chugging my way through Solidworks tutorials.

I'm seriously tempted to pledge these guys money, seriously tempted. It'd pay for itself within a month.

I'm getting one for my studio. I'm going through the solidworks tutorials myself. I reckon in two years, most objects used in composited photography will be made using this process. I'm going to make sure I'm first through the door.


Like you say, it'll pay for itself.

HP do a colour version which is very good. The only problem is the durability of the resin.

25um thick layers is pretty impressive, but I wonder if they can hold that degree of precision in dimensional tolerances? This technology isn't new, but the price certainly is, the last one of these I saw was >$30k. Combining something like this with a TechShop (http://www.techshop.ws/) would be something to see.
