Quote:
(AFP) Irish no-frills airline Ryanair on Monday confirmed its board has approved plans to start flying low-cost transatlantic routes in the next five years.

Proposed transatlantic fares would start from as little as £10 ($14, 13.99 euros) one-way...

Ya know, I read this and immediately thought about Geoff (I know, that's just wrong and scary). But in all seriousness, I'm not so sure this is a great idea. Lowering airfare prices to that extreme would ultimately allow any idiot, scumbag, and low-life to rome freely around the world. For lack of a better example, you'll start to see Geoff and his family all over the place and in your neighborhood. Tourism would skyrocket and the result would be trashy and devastating...

I've been all over the world. Criminal record means nothing when you travel.

This Ryanair deal will only affect tourist areas. Tourist areas, by definition, don't function for the residents of the country, so all this cheap air fare will do it pack more people into an area you yourself likely never visit.

Also, you need a passport to travel. The relative irritation of applying for one is a litmus test that will at find a good proportion of potential travellers staying home.

With all taxes and additional costs on top of that 10 quid it's still going to be an expensive undertaking.
I know a plane ticket from Amsterdam to London is like 10 euros for a premium airliner but you're spending like 10 times that amount in the end.

FFS. Fuck Ryanair. You'd have thought with all the pro environmental stuff this was a thing of the past.

There should be a tax on the emissions per mile.

was the low low ticket price not a clue before you booked the flight? you could have taken the train

oh wait, no you couldn't because that would have taken 4x longer, and you want convenience, right?

it was, I just didnt expect it that bad.

let me put it another way; the added comfort of a regular flight is surprisingly not parallel to the added price, though not a level of comfort I'd like to give up.
so maybe i should say, fuck those other airlines.

Since air travel only contributes 1% to man-made climate change, I reckon we're alright if they squeeze a few more flights in.

That's like the most ignorant reason why you'd be worried about this. People should travel, that's how some people become more enlightened, especially people of low economic status who aren't given opportunities to travel because of the outrageous costs.

The real problem is the quality of the flight and hidden costs that aren't being divulged until you board and realize it's going to cost 200$ per bag of luggage.

I once flew to Milan or so I thought. First I had to drive 2 hours to Weeze in Germany before the plane landed at Bergamo. Then we had to take a bus for 1 hour before getting dumped in the middle of Milan. First and last time.
