The thing is they'd be silly to release either of those games after all this time unless they were 100% perfect, which would be unlikely. The amount of publicity they get with everyone speculating if their new announcement is a new Half-Life or whatever is probably much more useful to them anyway.

also Turtle Rock said they'd not be doing l4d3 so it's all up to Valve and their internal dev team now.

I doubt it will be L4D3 since Turtle Rock Studios has probably been busy working on Evolve instead. HL3 would be too sick tho!

The reason why these new games get released in a shit state is because of the money men pressing for a release. Valve do not have that issue. They are loaded beyond almost any other gaming software house/distributor. 3 years ago conservative estimates were $3 billion. Given how it now has 125 million accounts and pretty much everything gets released on it, I would imagine it being closer to $5 billion.

Valve do not rush their games and they do not release rubbish. Portal 2 is one of the most polished games I have ever had the joy of playing. If any developer deserves your trust, it's them.

Pre ordering is a fad, though, especially with Valve games that are distributed and preloaded digitally via Steam. Pre ordering was useful when demand exceeded supply. That situation no longer exists.
