Andy,
I think it depends why you map.
I don't do it for recognition, I just build stuff because I enjoy it. It's like being a kid playing with Lego .
I really couldn't care less if there is only a handful of designers or players. I simply enjoy the process .

Agreed with dONKEY. If you like to build stuff for Quake 3, do it. If someone says it's crap and you should learn some techniques, do it. Good learning stuff is by Pat Howard - articles about level design - general tactics to make really good map. From layout through item placement to balanced gameplay. I follow these guides. I can say Pat Howard inspires me while building stuff (I have little time to build, now I will have more on the holidays), I just keep in mind what items are more valuable than others and if I make any mistake, community take a care on it and notify me. I know I must improve something since last testing release - I do it. I make proper changes, compile new version, test it, make levelshot and release.

What kind of game would be good enough to replace Quake 3 and Radiant?

well, if you want to move on to another game that's fine. i'm probably going to do the same to expand my portfolio with more modern games. but i'd just point out that i think you got plenty of feedback on your two maps so far. by "plenty" i mean more than enough to improve your craft. at some point you can't rely on other people's feedback to improve, you just have to keep mapping and studying other maps on your own to get better.

I also think you got plenty of good comments on your levels. I know that this isn't a valve community and you can't expect getting 600 comments on your level - ever here.

I think pretty much everyone here maps for Q3 cause it's fun mapping for Q3, I think these people also know that this is a very old game and very old tech and very much dead to most gamers and the press these days.

And most of us do not feel important to read through 600 comments and few really good and constructive critics are enough to get kicked in improving the map... Andy, I won't force you to stay with the Q3W LEM community, I just tell you that you should not lose under the pressure and be yourself...

I feel so sad about Andy :(
He was sooo enthusiastic about doing maps.

Seems like i had a sort of "BitFlip" :!:
I just realized that i have to learn more about the basics!
Scripting is new to me, also layouting... Blender, PhotoShop.. all new to me so i think i got an "Brain Overflow" at the moment i realized it. I have to plan stuff, doing stuff step by step and buy books, books and books.

About reading books that is fine... used to do that a lot too... but it usually is better to have some focus... e.g. you'd like to create a tileable texture in PS... so start reading up mostly free tutorials on the net... and there are quite a few video tutorials for Blender... I watched quite a few to get a feel for how things work (forgot all of that by now though)... so videos should nowadays actually be a better way to learn. Well... an important additional way at least. Visit YouTube for those.
