#IStandWithAhmed

Post by Eraser »

Only in the US of fucking A...
[14 year old] Ahmed made a clock. He likes to make thing and repair things and tinker with things, apparently. Last weekend he built a digital clock out of a circuit board and a power display and a digital display.

In his head, Ahmed lives in an idealized world he learned about in robotics club: a world where individuality and curiosity and initiative are appreciated. Or at least he did. But this week he found out that he actually lives in a different world, a grim real world controlled by school administrators and cops who are deeply suspicious of individuality, if not openly hostile. Ahmed lives in a world where children's lives are limited by the stupid, ineffectual fear of the petty and the ignorant.

In that world, Ahmed's clever clock didn't earn him admiration. It earned him a trip to the principal's office, a contemptuous and skeptical interrogation by an officer of the Irving Police Department, a suspension, and a trip in handcuffs to a juvenile detention center — because a circuit board with a time display must be a bomb, or at least intended to look like a bomb.

Actually nobody thought the clock was a bomb. The school didn't think it was a bomb. The police admitted they never thought it was a bomb. The police admitted Ahmed never suggested it was a bomb, or that he meant for anyone to think it was anything but a clock. But grown-ups detained, interrogated, arrested, and handcuffed Ahmed because they couldn't conceive of why a kid would build his own clock
Read the whole thing. It's an insightful article:

this part is what makes this the new gold standard for retard-level achievement. a Muslim kid made a clock that reminded schoolteachers and cops of a bomb

REMINDED THEM :dts: :dork: :alert:

What always surprises me about these things is that it isn't a case of one moron making a terrible judgment and blowing things out of proportion, it's a whole chain of people (teacher, school administration, various cops, etc) that seem to agree with each other that they are doing "the right thing" without there being a single person that says "hey, what in flying fucks name are we doing?"

I'm surprised the kid isn't in Gitmo by now. Fucking pussy-ass, out of touch, incompetent, politically correct, racist, fear-mongering, attention seeking, asshole teachers and cops wouldn't have done this to a cute little white girl with blonde hair, that's for fucking sure.

Bitches.

“We have no information that he claimed it was a bomb,” McLellan said. “He kept maintaining it was a clock, but there was no broader explanation.”

Asked what broader explanation the boy could have given, the spokesman explained:

“It could reasonably be mistaken as a device if left in a bathroom or under a car. The concern was, what was this thing built for? Do we take him into custody?”
Gahahahaha. What in the fuck. What a festering shit hole. The level of corruption on display here is fucking astounding. I don't mean corruption in the typical sense when talking about cops either. What fucking twisted thread of logic are these fucking babies following to come up with the thought that a broader explanation needs to be given for the inherent sense wonderment that all children possess, which is typically squashed into fucking oblivion by public school systems? These kids are apparently in school to be taught how to do things such as think for yourself and solve problems. Building a clock from scratch when you're 14 is not a bad feat. What was this thing built for? A kid was bored and was exploring rudimentary electrical engineering. Fuck me. America is truly a bastion of sub-human scum. What a fucking train wreck.

lol, they just showed this on the morning news and someone totally fucked up the subtitles from the press conference Ahmed gave.

"I tried to make a clock" - he said
"I tried to make a bomb" - subtitles.

Exactly what I was thinking, thank you. No bomb in a school procedure was followed, no bomb squad was called in, etc etc... Muslim-ish kid = he can make bombs

The kid's an idiot if he thought bringing a tangled mess of wires and circuits in in a metal box was going to go over smoothly.
Especially with all the school shootings that have been happening. The teachers and police realized it wasn't a bomb but considered it to be a 'hoax bomb' and still falls under a zero tolerance policy.
It would also appear he didn't even make the clock himself; he ripped the parts out of a factory-made clock from the 1980s and slapped it into a box.
Sure, he shouldn't have been arrested, but if the twat was clever enough to 'make' a clock at 14 he should have some common sense and not bring something reminiscent of a bomb into a school.

Dude, we were working on a weekly basis with tangled messes of wires in high school for our technical courses. It's exactly your kind of attitude that makes this world a horrible one. You're suspicious of everything.

The teachers and police didn't realize it wasn't a bomb, which is why the kid was handcuffed and degraded to some kind of terrorist. Also, it wasn't a hoax bomb. Not even remotely. It was a clock. A CLOCK! Nothing more!
Silicone_Milk wrote:It would also appear he didn't even make the clock himself; he ripped the parts out of a factory-made clock from the 1980s and slapped it into a box.
Who cares. The kid shows interest in technical stuff. It should be applauded instead. Too few kids these days get their hands dirty with stuff like that. They'd all rather be playing the so-manieth incarnation of FIFA on their Playstations.

It wasn't reminiscent of a bomb. That's the whole problem. People like you have been so brainwashed into assuming everything that shows electrical wires could be a bomb. It's a completely ridiculous assessment. Your government is keeping you living in fear.

To show what common sense really means: how about the scenario where the teacher asked the kid what he brought into class, the kid showed him he made a clock, the teacher said "oh that's really nice, well done kid" and class started. The kid would go home at the end of the day being proud of his achievement.

WHOA, WHAT A REVELATION!

This kids and his dad successfully trolled redneck islamophobes. Step one take an old clock and make it look like a Jack Bauer tv bomb by putting it in a mini briefcase with a battery pack and a bunch of wires. Step two bring it to a school and cause a shitstorm. Step four have your 2x presidential candidate of Sudan dad call the media. Step five.....profit!

step six get invited to show it to POTUS but have it scanned by the secret service first to make sure it isn't a, uh, bomb

Take a look at the context there - you were in a technical course in an environment where you were supervised. This kid randomly brings this clock in unsolicited.
This is a time where you can't even play dodgeball anymore because some puss might get hurt.
Eraser wrote: The teachers and police didn't realize it wasn't a bomb, which is why the kid was handcuffed and degraded to some kind of terrorist. Also, it wasn't a hoax bomb. Not even remotely. It was a clock. A CLOCK! Nothing more!
That isn't what I'm reading. What I'm seeing is they lost their shit because it reminded them of a bomb (even though they realized it wasn't a bomb).
Let's say Ahmed sincerely was moving the parts from a clock into a box and never intended to make people even think for a second that it might look like a bomb - it still did. Of course he's going to get into some kind of trouble. It's kind of like how there'll be consequences if you bring a toy gun to school. The teachers know it's not a real gun but it's made to look like a gun. It's a toy. A TOY! Nothing more! But it still reminds people of an actual gun in a public school setting. And people used to bring their rifles to high school every day and hunt when school let out. Times change.
Eraser wrote: Who cares. The kid shows interest in technical stuff. It should be applauded instead. Too few kids these days get their hands dirty with stuff like that. They'd all rather be playing the so-manieth incarnation of FIFA on their Playstations.
Reminiscent of a bomb but who cares? The kid is showing interest in technical stuff. Maybe he'll work for Lockheed Martin when he's older.
Why should he be applauded any more for being interested in technical stuff than any other kid ever that picked up a soldering iron or wrestled with compilers, or whatever instead of playing games? Because he's a victimized brown kid who happens to be Muslim?
The fact that it was simply moving parts out of one box into another is what really stands out to me and makes me feel that this whole story doesn't really add up. Taking the circuit board and display off some plastic and adhering it to the inside of more plastic doesn't really scream 'technical curiosity' to me. If he wanted to make a clock why not go get a kit or dick around with a raspberry pi or something? He didn't make a clock here he just changed it's case.

Pretty nice clock.

Clearly just an electrical timing device. It's not as if bombs were ever known to use electrical timing devices.

I'm curious who the people you're grouping me with are. I'm not assuming everything that shows electrical wires could be a bomb I just realize others can look at circuits and wires in a metal case and think bomb. Hell, I was nervous just bringing a motherboard and video cards through customs in China because I realize somebody could be stupid enough to think 'circuit = bomb'. When I was in school I never would have even considered bringing a clock I 'made' into school with it looking like that because I would realize it could be looked at the wrong way.

So somebody makes something that looks like it could be a bomb. "What is that you've got there?" "A clock." Common sense is not taking that at face value. If, by some chance, it actually were a bomb and the teacher was just like "well it's got numbers and the kid says it's a clock" then we'd have another school massacre just because a teacher was afraid of being racist for questioning a kid who happened to not be white.
The school acted appropriately, in my opinion. When it comes to the safety of all students, you shouldn't take any chances regardless of how stupid you might seem for saying a clock that looks like it could be a bomb "something that reminds me of a bomb".
What I'm reading right now indicates that his English teacher was alerted to the clock when the box of wires and circuits started beeping in the kid's backpack.

Everything's working out pretty well for our brave heroic victim here. His ability to change the case of a clock earned him an offered internship at Twitter, invites to the White House, a shitload of scholarship money, offers from NASA and MIT to tour their buildings, donations, and more.

^ you're probably not wrong in thinking that. i went to school in the 70s and 80s and even i think that levels of preciousness, risk-aversion and sheer god-damned faggotry have reached critical point
