He gave that cube a good looking over before he started whereas I thought they were handed a cube by someone who scrambled it before the record attempts.

I have heard some even lube their cubes before attempting the record.

It is scrambled by someone else but they can study the cube before actually solving it. There are special speed-cubing Rubik's cubes. The blocks are really loose and not comfortable to work with if you're an average Joe solver.

Nice. I recall when they first came out and I had to have one
It took me months to solve and when I did I took a (film) photo of the solved cube in front of a mirror.

I say film photo because it was long, long ago, early 1980's I am near sure.
