I wonder how flexible SnapMap will be. If it turns out you can do some really cool things with it, then that may cause the level editing and "modding" scene to explode.

The problem with designing levels or modding modern day games is that it's reached a level of complexity and demands on time invested that it's no longer viable to do serious modding for most people. Something like Rocket Arena 3, which is pretty simple code-wise, but came with a wide array of custom maps is probably no longer easily doable for a game like DOOM. Combine that with the fact that there's three dozen other games competing for gamers' time, nobody is willing to invest time and effort into creating a mod anymore.

SnapMap, however, might actually be DOOM's saving grace here. Unless it's seriously restricted in what you can do with it, SnapMap might allow lots of people to create interesting gameplay twists with very little effort. It probably won't allow you to create total conversion type of mods like what we had in the Quake 3 days (Urban Terror, Bid For Power, QRally, etc) but so far it looks like things such as Rocket Arena, Domination and even Defrag are very well possible to do within SnapMap.

"Players won’t be able to change the geometry of the modular pieces in any way, but their properties can be tweaked significantly to create different moods and looks for each created level. The effects include a wide variety of lighting options, smoke, particles, decals, objects on the walls – there’s a lot of stuff that can be cycled through quickly."

Snapmap itself is fine, and lots of peeps will probably have fun with it, but there should be mod tools for advanced users.

1. Rage was difficult to mod with megatexture afaik.

2. Rage has no meaningful multiplayer or community

3. "X had an SDK and it didn't turn out so well" is a non argument and can be made about any game. A game that might have a huge modding community would be lost if people subscribe to that line of thinking.

4. Rage sucks dick

If Snapmap is what I think it is and is the only offering, then I'm skeptical that this game will have any kind of longevity or competitive future.

The new Doom might be difficult to mod, might not have meaning multiplayer, and might suck dick...

Looks cool. Not a fan of the announcer voice though.
It's nowhere near as good as the Quake 3 one. Very weak :(

Sweet!
Last time I bought a high end desktop system was right before Doom 3 was released. After that I drifted off into console land with my Xbox 360. The release of Doom will be the moment I am fully commit back to PC gaming. I will buy a new PC to be able to play Doom. Oh yes.

It's tax deductible! I'll have to put it in my i5 and keep the i7 for work, but it shouldn't make too much much difference. The i5s are still really competitive.

I love the aesthetics of the MP preview. I'm playing The Division which is fun and everything, but I miss the pace of Q3. I sunk thousands of hours into dota2 because it's like fucking crack, but I never enjoyed it like I enjoyed Quake. Same goes for Counter Strike. There's a lot riding on this id, don't fuck it up!

I enjoyed playing games with phant back when he played games with plebs like me and memph. Left for dead and battlefield and such. Oh those were the days!

Now it's all 'you have to buy a new computer if you want to play with me nya nya', what a penis.

Before I weaned myself off it you could have played dota with me anytime <3

Those l4d evenings were really fun. You should really spend in excess of £1000 and relive them with Doom!

Dota never clicked with me, tried it once but i put that crackpipe right down :(

:olo: and i'd love to, but it depends on what i get back in taxes this year... and if i get picked for that new job i applied for... but mostly on how much i'll be spending on my house which still isn't finished (fuck you house, fuck you, i'm so fucking tired of your shit).

Cheers! <3

And compared with the UK everything aside from maybe Paris is affordable my friend :) Perhaps some day we'll have a beer and i'll tell you terrifying tales of woe about this concrete shithole i bought, where we experienced everthing from an electrical fire that fried all our new machines to a minor flood which fucked some other shit up.

Which is why, assuming we don't fucking leave the EU, the plan is to buy somewhere in Cevennes; where my girlfriend grew up. Fuck this country

Had to google that, France eh? Cool stuff, been in that area a few times i think, a friend of my dad lives on a mountaintop pretty close to there.

Picked up a bit of the language yet? Frenchies are big on that sort of thing, though they'll already warm to you if you merely know the first bit of the Marseillaise but manage to sing it with enough gusto.

She's teaching me, slowly, but without practice it's hard. She's bilingual and her dad lives in France so it's not a huge obstacle. Besides, all I need to know is fromage, chevre and vin.

Having a partner that speaks the language is an enormous help i think

And yes those three words seem essential and they certainly are, but you simply must work on your cursing more to truly win the heart of the French.

I had a flat tire when on holiday in France.
Explain to a french mechanic that you need it repaired and need it repaired today because tomorrow's the big trip back home.
Jesus fucking Christ, they're not even trying to understand you if you don't speak fluent French.

Bonsoir! J'ai un probleme mon ami! *point at flat tire* Aujourdhui c'est la grand voyage a les Pays Bas, et tu comprends biensur que je veux fumer un joint ce soir. S'il vous plait resoudre le problème! Avec grand vitesse!

Shit, that actually seems about half right. Usually i can only speak French when i'm drunk, go figure.
