why in the F is my computer re-booting

Post by kdub22 »

I was having trouble with programs having errors and closing. My computer would just re-boot itself on ocasion. So after spending alot of time trying to fix the problem I just reformatted and wiped it out, started over. I don't seem to have the error problems anymore, but the comp still re-boots. Sometimes when I open a program or close one. Sometimes when i close a webpage it does it. Its not everytime, or even all the time but it still is happening.

Does anyone have any ideas on this?

wich OS? after reinstalling it did you enable the firewall before hooking up your network cable to get all the critical updates?

does it come with SP2 preinstalled?

reason im wondering is, if you go online after a format without SP2 and no firewall, you will likely be infected quickly with the virus that shuts off your computer.

no sp2 is not installed.

so i should install and turn on my firewall?
i'm using an anti-virus program so i'm pretty sure i dont have a virus, I can't be sure.

oh yeah, get all the critical updates and a firewall would be a good idea.

get all the updates and see if it is still rebooting.

ok thanks, i will do that.

since it doesn't reboot all the time it may take awhile to determine whether this works or not. but i'll keep posting.

might as well get all the latest drivers and such for your hardware also.

once you eliminate all the software possibilties you can start looking at hardware trouble.

Try to play a 3D game thats intense on the CPU (UT2k4) and see if it reboots. Then it might be the CPU overheating.

Q3 didn't do anything when my motherboard sensors were saying that my cpu was running at 74C, it only rebooted in UT2k4.

the system temp is 32. the cpu temp is 61. the fan speed is about 4200rpm. the shutdown temp is set at 75.

Tell me you've at least got a router between the 'net and your unpatched, unprotected, and highly exploitable workstation.

Start by turning off auto restart (start > run > control sysdm.cpl > advanced > startup and recovery > uncheck auto restart). Then check the error code of the blue screen which will follow when it next locks up. Also try running Memtest as random reboots many times signify a failure with either memory or power supply.

This isn't the Blaster worm or one of its variants because an RPC server shutdown messages occurs before the restart on infected systems.

On other thing to check is that there is not dust buildup inside your case. That can act as an insulator and could explain your higher than normal temps.

I think the CPU temps are too high, I do'nt know if it runs at 61C on idle or with a load, but you need some better cooling on the CPU.
you definatly need SP2, now for this install I would download it, but you can order, for free, a CD from MS that has SP2 on it. Click Here. Completely free, arrieves in about 2 weeks.

Tormentius,

Yes, i do have a router. I also have turned on the firewall.

I d/l memtest and ran it for over a 1/2 hour and found no errors or problems with the memory. If the power supply is going bad I guess I just have to wait until it dies then replace it.

I also turned off the auto-restart, but of course it has not rebooted itself since. When it does I'll post any error code I see.

I try to blow the dust off the inside on a regular basis, I was told from another source that that could be a cause for the reboots as well.

Is ther a way to check my cpu temp while the comp is working and running programs?

I also have SP2 installed now, we'll see if that helps too.

I am running a GeForce FX 5500 256mb AGP video card.

Thanks guys

You can also goto your mobo manufacture's site and get a temp monitoring software there

Yeah, but theres a big chance that it wouldn't show it in the tray. Thats why I love speedfan.

Do you mean show the program in the sys tray or the temps?
Cause most mobo m anufacture's proggies goto sys tray, but don't display the temps there

I got that program running and checking out the temps and fan speeds. I don't know what temps I should be at in order to make fan adjustments. If I even can with my motherboard.

thanks

Check which temp is the highest. Thats the CPU temp. Post it here. At idle and after playing q3 for 10 mins. u can also see a graph in that program.

the temp at icle was 58. then after about 20 minutes of quake it went up to 64. by the time i finished this reply its gone down to 61.

what temp should it be running at? i'm guessing in the low 50's. how can i fix it?

I've been going thru the help file and the version used in it is an older version then the one I'm using, and some of tabs and displays are a little different so I'm having trouble trying to configure my speeds for the desired temps.
