Thanks. Yeah I'm down as soon as I get some padded cycling shorts! Any suggestions?

get some slick marathon plus

and replace those cheap pedals ffs
It only came with disks, as Doombrain said.

I don't want slicks right now, I plan on biking on gravel paths and stuff.

What's wrong with the Giant Shredder pedals I picked? I want to start biking on flat pedals for now because I'm a noob and I'm going to be biking in city traffic. They're only 285g and have sealed bearings, I think they're actually quite nice.

I already have Shimano PD-M785 XT that I'm gonna replace them with once I'm ready to ride clipless.

No idea, I just read that they're better.

BTW, I just weighed the bike: 18.8 lbs (8.5 kg)

hydraulics can overheat

not a problem i've ever had with mine though, but then i live in the UK :owned:

edit: mechanicals are way cheaper - that's their only advantage

MEC is pretty much the go-to for bike stuff in the city. I'm not too concerned about padding because my seat feels fairly comfortable, but you can check these out:

So I finally broke down and bought a bike. I decided this would be a good starter. Big enough to comfortably ride and inexpensive enough to get rid of if I don't enjoy it.

Local Holiday: We dropped in to our local motoring club to pick up some free road maps yesterday. Yes, some freebies still exist.

We are planning a driving holiday down south over two weeks this July (our winter in Australia). We just love the cold. Google maps say it is about 4,000 kilometres (round trip)but you can add 1k (tourist contingency) so about 5,000 kilometres all up. That will make a nice drive. We have friends we can drop in on and it will be nice to catch up :)

Last we were down that way we did the picturesque Great Ocean Road. I have a DVD somewhere with our helicopter tourist flight over the The Twelve Apostles and that was awesome.
Search images for Great Ocean Road/The Twelve Apostles as you wish.
I've also driven the Great Ocean Road and seen the Apostles formations. Just as impressive to me as the cliffs and seastacks were the pastel water colors - unlike anything I'd seen elsewhere in Australia and possibly anywhere. There was an uncomfortable number of tourists at the main lookout but elsewhere in that area there were tracks down to beaches with comparatively few (or no) people milling around.

Yes, it is a beautiful stretch of coastline for sure. Did you make it as far as My Gambier, just across the South Australia border as we did megami?

Well, to be honest I'm not even sure it came with the tin. I guess it did because I wouldn't know how else I got it.

Murica? It's a Honda...

No. I'm a leader, not a follower. And I don't really have the time or desire to start a gang right now. Thanks.

Japanese import? lol oh dear, that's not going to get you much credibility is it? are all the hill billies and veterans in the suburb ignoring you?

Who's going to go shooting guns at targets and protecting freedom with you now?

No wonder you're not allowed in the bike gang.

hey gramps, if you had rocked up in this thread with a Harley Superglide we would still have mocked you, but we'd have mocked you from a standpoint of suppressed jealousy

as it is, we're just mocking you, no jealousy :(

I guess I might be concerned if I were being "mocked" by someone of significance. So if that's what it takes to get you through the day, mock away.

I didn't get a Harley for a few reasons. 1. I'm not sure just how much I'm going to like riding. I already have several expensive hobbies (boating, shooting, PC Gaming). So I didn't want to go all in on a Harley only to find out I really didn't enjoy riding. 2. I haven't ridden in over 20 years. I'm sure I'm going to drop, scratch, dent this bike. It's a lot easier to get over damaging a $3000.00 starter bike than a $20k/$30k Harley. 3.This bike is smaller (not too small) than the bike I would ultimately want. But I believe I should get some practice riding something easier to control first. 4. Fuck you.

You aren't going to enjoy riding that because it's a heavy lump of yank want to be shit designed by tiny Japanese men. Would have been better off getting a street fighter style bike to offset your top heavy head.

Ha I'm joking. Perfect bike for long roads and no bends and better built than anything in the US.
