Overwatch

As one may know, MS recently opened up the Live services allowing for cross platform play, if implemented by the developer.
Blizzard though just nerfed the turrets on consoles and only consoles. So so much for that.
@Donny yep
Re: Overwatch
Cross play has always been available on xbox live even as far back as the xbox 360. I often played against pc players on Shadowrun, even got an acheivement for killing a PC player.
The recent announcement of cross play was more of a "hey we can do this" than an actual announcement of some kind of new feature.
Pretty sure I've been playing lots of PC players in Rocket League.
edit: Also, the turrets are fine the way they are now, it's mostly noobs that can't handle it.

Re: Overwatch
twas only shadowrun, cause that was an MS game. Rocket League isn't and is the first game to make use of the open Live environment.
but we digress.

Re: Overwatch
After watching pro pc players play overwatch I really wouldn't want to run into them on the xbox one tbh...
Re: Overwatch
I lost my first 6 placement matches and won my last 4, ended up with a ranking of 42. My FPS skills were never particularly good, but man have I gotten rusty over the years... I have to rely on heroes who don't have to aim. I have 25 hours on Junkrat and Mercy, 6 on Winston and Torb, and I don't really play anyone else. :/
Competitive play was fun, but mostly because I was in a group of 5 and we were all on Discord. None of us take the game particularly seriously, so we were all enjoying ourselves. Occasionally someone on the other team would shit talk or the rando 6th member would complain or whatnot, but after 15 years of Q3W, it's like water off a duck's back.
Between the generous hitboxes and the variety of character choices, you can make up for sucky aim with good map awareness, team coordination, and hero counters.

Re: Overwatch
It runs pretty smooth on PC. I have two GeForce GTX 560 Ti's and the settings cranked nearly to max at 1080p, and I get 50-60 FPS everywhere, even with this 3-year-old gaming rig.

I finished my placement matches today and got an initial rank of 53, got one more win after that and climbed to 54. I'm relishing the cohesiveness of teams in Competitive Play. People are actually willing to listen, and most play good characters/roles. They'll also swap out if asked and I've had a few teams also using mics. This is great so far, looks like a promising start to the season and modeTransient wrote:I lost my first 7 placement matches and won last last 3, ended up with a ranking of 42. I'm playing on a single 560Ti in my 5 year old machine. Runs at constant 60 fps at 1680 x 1050 resolution, but I think it's on medium or high, not max. Still, looks really pretty and is well optimized too.Transient wrote:It runs pretty smooth on PC. Re: Overwatch
I play it on a laptop with a shitty Radeon 8850M in there. I need to drop all settings to low, put the rendering resolution scale down to like 75% (with a full size res of 1920x1080) and cap it at 30 frames per second but it's very well playable that way. It's not ideal, but it's all I got and it's a testament to how well this game runs on low end hardware.
Re: Overwatch
I find myself appreciating Blizzard's attention to detail, especially while waiting for a match to start. The banter between characters is a nice touch. As is the ability to interact with so many things, like shooting oxygen tanks and fire extinguishers, or shooting tubs of popcorn and seeing the model change to an empty tub while pieces of popcorn go flying everywhere. They even stack empty tubs inside one another on the countertop, and if you shoot them, they all go flying apart. Zarya's long coat gets kicked up by her heels while she runs, Mei gets a shocked expression on her face when she's shot...

Re: Overwatch
I like the detail in the lc-202 dialog!
Re: Overwatch
I think it's kind of ironic how the attacking team in Watchpoint Gibraltar always starts off with smashing their own base to bits

Re: Overwatch
I don't care much to shoot everything but I do like taking shots at the basket with the basketball. It's just a matter of time until I get one. I'm inches away most shots off the table.
Re: Overwatch
I just make baskets with Junkrat's grenade launcher.

Re: Overwatch
Really starting to get to grips with quite a few characters now. Such a rewarding game when you work as a unit to defend or attack. Much love for this

Re: Overwatch
Well shit. Decided to get it too - picking it up tomorrow

Re: Overwatch
The banter is amazing! And not just the super cereal Soldiers and Reapers of the world barking at each other, or people talking to Pharah about her mum, or just reminiscing about the old days. My favourites are the more lighthearted ones.Transient wrote:The banter between characters is a nice touch.
Junkrat: Brrr. I get cold just looking at ya.
Mei: Then you should look somewhere else.
Hilarious and ice cold shutdown. Chortling when I heard it the first time.
Also, Junkrat saying Tracer's catchphrase sarcastically. The cheerful indignation in her response is adorable.
Junkrat: Cheers, mate! The cavalry's here!
Tracer: That's my line!
Or Reinhardt and Lucio chatting about music.
Reinhardt: Kids today with techno music. You should enjoy the classics, like Hasselhoff.
Lúcio: I can't even take you seriously right now.
BTW, a fairly complete sound board: http://rpboyer15.github.io/sounds-of-overwatch/
Re: Overwatch
So played a few rounds last night, after about 2 hrs worth of not being able to login at all.
The polish of this game makes me *squeee*. The quotes, the animations, the timing in screentransitions. Delish.
Tried a few different heroes. I usually go for Support or Defense in these games - I'm not one for Offense - and I landed on either DVa and Symmetra. Went with Soldier76 a few times when the game told us there were too few Offense heroes (a great feature for pubs btw).
I want to like Tracer but she really needs to reload too often. I was able to take down the same Reinhardt twice by blinking past him and unloading. That was fun.
lvl6 atm. I'll probably take a peek outside my comfortzone tonight and try some random other heroes.

Re: Overwatch
I recommend Torbjorn on Defence and Mercy in attack. Team up with someone who you know can attack properly and you will be laughing.
This game has me Quake 3 levels of wanting to play more.

Re: Overwatch
I love tracer. I can keep a group of 3 enemies pretty occupied for 30 seconds to a minute before I have to retreat. If my team is capable of pressing the attack it makes it pretty easy for them to succeed. Big tanks all have an animation before attacks that'll finish me so I just save up teleports and use them when I see them. Roadhog takes his hook out before throwing it.
Problem with tracer is you need a solid team capable of dispensing damage from the front. When I start doing more damage than the front lines I get destroyed by numbers.

Was playing as tracer and things weren't working out so I switched to pharah....

Went better than expected.

Re: Overwatch
I've done similar with Junkrat's mine on that stage. Environmental kills are so satisfying.

Re: Overwatch
How are placement matches matched up? Is it completely random? Most quick play matches I've been were enjoyable romps, usually quite close games.
I've done 9 placement matches so far. In 8 of em my team got completely overwhelmed. In one game it was the opposite. Not a single close game like I regularly have in quick play.

Re: Overwatch
I find once you get ranked the matches seem very balanced. Having a blast so far.
