need help on running a demo

when ever i type in /play demo file i always get the error of "cannot find demo.wav". i just got this game and dont know much of the details so if you can help me on getting this going, i would appreciate it alot. like were i put the file or what i need, etc. would help alot. thanks.

just type /demo demoname

alright thanks, but were should i put the file? it says it cant load demos/file.dm_68. i put the demo into my quake3 folder and no were else.

baseq3/demos

/play "demoname without .dm_68 at end"
