News Is Bad For You

Post by lars63 »

In the past few decades, the fortunate among us have recognised the hazards of living with an overabundance of food (obesity, diabetes) and have started to change our diets. But most of us do not yet understand that news is to the mind what sugar is to the body. News is easy to digest. The media feeds us small bites of trivial matter, tidbits that don't really concern our lives and don't require thinking. That's why we experience almost no saturation. Unlike reading books and long magazine articles (which require thinking), we can swallow limitless quantities of news flashes, which are bright-coloured candies for the mind. Today, we have reached the same point in relation to information that we faced 20 years ago in regard to food. We are beginning to recognise how toxic news can be. More:

some of his reasoning is stupid, like the health effects argument ("omg news gives you cancer, just like everything else!"), but if you add social media to the list of dumb shit people should avoid, he makes a good - though not exactly earth-shattering - point

he could have added that a lot of so-called 'news' is little more than clickbait: non-stories lifted from twitter designed to give advertisers a better cost-per-click ratio

pro-tip: if you want to learn about the world, read a fucking book

Interesting premise and article lars63

Sometimes I have thought along similar lines and yes, I think news these days is a drug to some they simply must consume. Then 'drugs' are suppose to benefit the patient; sady I see nobody better off for hearing/seeing what is served out these days as news :smirk:

Still, I am of the opinion we should be aware of what can and is happening around us.

I'm of the opinion that there are lot better news sources out there than this guy but I put it up just to see what the rest of you thought. *LOL* Guess I found out
