... the largest such object to pass so close to Earth since 2004. CBS News science and futurist contributor Dr. Michio Kaku joins ‘CBS This Morning’ to discuss how the asteroid will not affect us now but underscores the looming dangers of other space objects headed our way. WATCH NOW!

Re: Massive asteroid close to Earth
Isn't it true that you can stick such a date to any asteroid that passes Earth? Some dates just go a bit further back than others.

it's things like this we have to worry about:

I bet its bcuz Putin, Trump or some Nazis!
Re: Massive asteroid close to Earth
Did it pass the earth yet or is due?
Re: Massive asteroid close to Earth
The chances of one hitting us are so remote... After playing games like Elite Dangerous which give you a great perspective on how tiny in such a vast expanse it's easy to see how minuscule the chances are of being struck. It only seems big because we live on it and that's how we perceive it.
Chances are, our end won't be at the hands of some random asteroid. It'll be a giant star in our own galaxy that explodes and irradiates us with gamma rays.

And on the flipside, if you extend over time, the chance becomes a certainty. Over its existence, Earth will be hit again by an extinction event asteroid.
In fact, if you look at the statistics, we're overdue one

Re: Massive asteroid close to Earth
You also have to keep in mind that as more and more asteroids in our system collide with large objects there are less and less asteroids to go around...

This is why you get trolled so much. #ijsΚracus wrote:After playing games like Elite Dangerous

This also works in reverse, in that it can create more debris due to the extremely low gravity. It's like a cycle... little asteroids get hoovered up by bigger asteroids who get smashed apart by equals. The real problem is comets n shit coming from outside the solar system, or the Oort cloud and knocking shit about.Κracus wrote:You also have to keep in mind that as more and more asteroids in our system collide with large objects there are less and less asteroids to go around...
Theoretically Earth is advanced enough to spot anything amiss well in advance, wether we can do something about it is another story.

Whatevs, I still think it's a great tool to showcase how tiny we are in relative terms to other celestial bodies.Doombrain wrote:This is why you get trolled so much. #ijsΚracus wrote:After playing games like Elite Dangerous

Of course we can. Just send Bruce Willis up, he'll fix it for us.losCHUNK wrote:This also works in reverse, in that it can create more debris due to the extremely low gravity. If NASA tried to communicate with it they'll find it's just seza's head wobbling about
Re: Massive asteroid close to Earth
Well I was reading about an experiment where NASA was going to try changing the orbit of an asteroid by placing something heavy next to it and capturing it in orbit. If you catch a potential planet killer early enough then you'd only need a tiny change in direction to send it back off into space.Eraser wrote:Of course we can. Trumps cut backs cancelled the fucking project though, along with the Europa lander

Perchance we might use said sizeable noggin to plug the perilous potential Yellowstone calamity?
