Set during the period of daylight strategic bombing of Germany from mid-1942 to the end of the war, The Mighty Eighth is based on the book Masters of the Air by Donald J. Miller. It will be a ten part event that will tell the story of the U.S. Army Air Corps’ Eighth Air Force, which was the tip of the spear during the Allies’ daylight bombing campaign over fortress Europe.
With that backdrop, you can expect a very Band of Brothers like story arc which will focus on several crews who interact with one another, and who will suffer all the loss that comes with seeing whole crews of their friends shot of the sky by flak and defending Luftwaffe fighters. It will also feature documentary interviews from surviving members of those crews, much like Band of Brothers did with Major Dick Winters and members of Easy Company in the 101st Airborne.
Can't wait, should be good. HBO is spending half a billion dollar on this.
