My gf recently got a Motorola Moto G5 plus. It's a very clean, very cheap, very capable Android phone. If you're not looking for the most powerful high-end phone available but want something that's in the high mid-range, then that phone is an absolute recommendation.

New or second hand? I'd be temped by a Nexus 6P / LG G5 - both about £150 second hand and both have good cameras.

As Eraser said, Moto G's are really good phones for the price.

A friend of mine has a OnePlus phone that he said he liked. It's relatively cheap but pretty high end I think so it might be too expensive.

edit: Oh, didn't read the last post. Galaxy S7 is also expensive I see, thought you were looking for something cheaper.

Get the Galaxy S7. It's a solid phone, great camera and it'll play MP3s with it's built in player. The only down side is you can't change the battery.

All modern phones worth getting will be either iOS or Android. Pick your favourite and go with it. I go with Apple for simplicity, I don't have time to muck around with stuff and manually put things on or off of it. Just sync it and go. Of course, others will prefer a little more control and decide on using Android. To each their own.

I will say that iOS will support your self-ripped MP3's without issue, though you need to load it in through iTunes. The next iPhone will be released very soon.

If you want to go Android, note that Samsungs come with all sorts of Samsung software bloat, nice hardware though. If I were to go Android, I'd look into the new Google Pixel coming out.

Built in batteries are a non-issue. Modern phones are more energy efficient with better batteries and I can easily get a couple of days charge.

I have a OnePlus 3t and love it. I've heard good things about the OnePlus 5 too.

OnePlus 3/5 would be the way to go, but someone like you would probably be best off with an Apple iPhone.

Android requires no more configuration than iOS. Just because you can doesn't mean you should. My gf logged in with her Gmail account on her new phone and bam, everything from the old phone is there.

I'm anxious to see what they show us at the Apple event tomorrow. My iPhone 6 kicked the bucket a couple weeks ago and I'm looking to upgrade. Heard the 8 will be $1k or more. Seems outrageous, but whatever...

The Bluetooth interface is fuct. It has problems connecting and staying connected to various devices. The audible notifications for apps, emails, texts are goofy and reset from time to time. The email interface SUCKS. The way it displays emails and allows you to respond is retarded. The phone constantly has issues with transitioning from ear to eye. Meaning it blacks out the screen when you put it to your ear. But doesn't turn the display on when you try to look at it. It's cellular connectivity has always been inferior to the Galaxy. I constantly find myself moving to a window or outside to use this phone. Though apps and the internet work well. If you're looking for a work, look somewhere else. Maybe the next pixel will be better. But that's a chance someone else will have to take.

My phone is connected to 4 different email addresses. 2 business and 2 personal. I Bluetooth to 5 different devices. I use my phone for both personal and professional phone calls, all day every day. I can't imagine your usage comes close in comparison to mine.

The pixel might be fine for casual users who make a couple of calls and play on the internet.
