Connection keeps disconnecting

Post by DRuM »

This never used to happen, but now, my virgin net broadband connection disconnects religiously every hour. I've gotten rid of various spyware but it still happens. Virgin net haven't introduced a new rule to my knowledge. I've also unchecked the 'disconnect if idle for ..' and 'disconnect when connection may no longer be needed'. Doesn't help.

I will be doing a full virus check, and perhaps I need to disable sys restore in case any resident spyware or viruses are doing this?
Any ideas?

Did you ever think that mabye it is your isp that is shafting you? It's either that or what happened to me was the cables were bad, and had to be replaced.

Hmm, could be the cables, or the adsl splitters? But once an hour? Seems too regular a time to be dodgy cables. Could be virgin net, I'll have to ring them. I've gone into safe mode and cleared over a 1000 temp files in my documents and settings folder. A lot of viruses were showing up from that folder. I'll have to see if it still disconnects.

ADSL Uses the phone line correct? If it does plug the phone cable into a phone, pick up the reciever and make sure you don't hear any static. That can seriously cause a lot of problems, even with a small amount.

It can but not these type of problems. Get back to us once you've run those scans Drum (and ffs use MS antispyware with real-time turned on :p )

Yep Mr.T, have always had real time on, and it does flag up any changes and removes trojans and stuff if and when they install themselves. Currently running a PC-cillin virus scan.

edit: no viruses. I've uninstalled emule and e-donkey in case they had anything to do with it. Might do a sys restore to see if it makes any difference. Still diconnecting once every hour.

Well I dunno. Reinstalled modem, rang ISP, (I was told no problem at their end), gotten rid of all spyware apart from 2 or 3 adware things in system restore ( but I doubt they'll be affecting anything?)
and it still disconnects every hour, almost on the hour. Dunno what else to try.
