While I'm not a running expert, I ama good runner so I'll try and help ya

First off don't drink milk before you run unless you want to throw up. And if you do eat/drink anything before you run, do it at least a half hour before you run.

Make sure you stretch every muscle in your legs for about 30 seconds to a minute per stretch to get loosened up. This will probably help you with the running out of breath quickly problem, since your legs will be already warmed up and ready to go.

You want to be sure you are running correctly as well. Don't swing your arms around alot; try to keep them in tight with as little effort as possible. Moving your arms around alot just wastes energy and will wear out your midsection.

Don't worry if your shoes are a little tight right now because they will stretch out after a week or so. But be SURE that the type of support the shoe gives corresponds to the foot type you have and the step that you have. If you have arches, get something with adequate arch support, and if you have a step the rolls to the outside/inside be sure that the shoe is made to handle that. I don't know how else to put it. Also make sure the shoe is lightweight...a heavy shoe will just make your legs tired fast.

Always stretch afterwards for twice as long as you did before you started. This will prevent injuries and increase your flexibilty/strength.

Tomorrow morning I got a 7 mile run, and that will be the longest I have ever run in one shot. I think that we are running as a group though. I'll let you know how that goes

hit me on instant messenger if you got any questions. I can probably answer them

andyman's talking about supination vs. protination here, in case you want to look into it more. He's right though -- the wrong shoes can injure you quickly. I don't know what shoes are good for which type of step, but I'm sure there's info out there.

my Asics running shoes have extra support on the medial side of the shoes cause I overpronate my feet when walking and running. (the heels of my shoes wear off quicker on the medial side as well)

tx a lot andyman - helpful stuff there.

i'm not sure how arched my feet are. I can see a slight arch on the medial side, but the lateral side is flat.

I bought Asics Gel-Connect

Check out what i picked up today jules.

http://www.marinbikes.com/bicycles_2005 ... trail.html

Im so stoked, i cant wait to start getting back into shape. Im having a pizza party tonite then its on to a better style of eating. Still ened to work my diet out, but i think its safe to say that pints of ice cream and pizza isnt on it :(

Gratz ont he running man, i been meaning to start up witht hat too, but im a lil concerned with knee shock and old age. im worried that as i grow older the stress on my knee from the running might F it up. Is there any evidence to support this stance? Its basicly why i decided to bike instead of run.

FYI, runner chics are hot ;)

classy lookin bike there :)

yea i'm really not that knowledgable about knees/joints and running. Swimming would be a safer form of cardio no doubt, but running has advantages such as being able to interact with the city in nice weather...

alongside those hot running chics...

Hey man there is no doubt, no matter how old ( with in reason ) a chic is, you can tell by her legs isntantly if she is a runner and its a good kinda thing. They are healthy and vibrant, just what i wanna be /flips hair, ehem.. I mean its a manly feeling to run.

Seriously though, i agree swimming is rough stuff man, if you ever get a chance to surf bro, do it, i think its the best sport out there hands down. You dont get big from it, you get lean and in shape, quick and agile. Good stuff man.

So you run in the city ? No outdoor life and bears and stuff for you ?

yea i'd love to pick up surfing some time. If i get into UBC for grad school (vancouver), i'll be by the coast, so I'll definitely give it a shot there.

Till now I'm running my neighbourhood, which is an awesome area. Just wish toronto wasn't so polluted :/

well i just ran the 5k run.

I hadn't been able to train for it with jogging, as i developed severe pain in my shins about a week into the training. But cycling to work did the trick.

finished it in 25 min, sprinted like a deranged and screaming ape during the last 150m or so.

Pretty pleased, as the furthest i'd run before that was 3k, and barely managed that in 15 min.

Awesome man My wife just signed me up for a 5K run in a few weeks Reading this topic hopefully will help me out...

She just ran one last week, I though she was insane, this girl has not run a foot in about 5 years and she did it with absolutely no training it took her 40 minutes though ;)

25 is pretty good, a friend of mine who runs marathons did it in 20 he wasn't ready for it but it was a decent time.

I have about 3 weeks to prep and I havn't run since if fubared my ankle a few years ago, but I have really been wanting to run lately so this is a good push. I want to set my goal at between 25 and 30 minutes, I think I can pull it off :D

gluck with that GH - 40 min is quite respectable for a lady who is completely untrained. Be interesting to see how she could do if given 2 months of intensive training.

Biggest key to the race for me was pacing slowly at the start and not being tempted to increase too fast.

Plus i cycled down there so i was relatively warm.

Well i cant speak for running cause i havent started that yet, but i can speak to you on surfing and biking and other stuff.

When bike i tend to feel the same thing, the out of breathe and tired thing, but if i push myself it goes away, personaly i think its a psychological reaction to the task at hand. Deep down you would rather be relaxing someplace so your pushing yourself and at some point your mind goes " ok i guess there is no way out" and adjusts to the enviroment its in. So yes its normal or atleast your not alone.

The shit in your lungs is always there. All day as you swallow mucous drips from your nose to your lungs. Since you dont fully make use of your lungs on a normal basis, you never notice cause you dont need the full potential. Again, nothing to worry about, i think you will find as you run more there will be less to cough up and now that i have told you this you will notice that when you swallow sometimes your sucking down nasal drippings.

Tracking your running there is tons of things you can get. I remember when i was a kid my mom had a hip counter, basicly it would be on your hip and as you bounce up and down it would measure miles by the motion. I promise there is more advanced and acurate items out there now.

Well aparently she wants to sign me up for a few more all these runs are logged and posted on the web. So I'm going to keep track of our times and see how we improve over the course of the summer.

one interesting condition for my race was that I hadn't had any form of sex for about 5 days.

That includes milking one's ostrich.

but this was an incidental condition - not like i planned for it.

Dunno if it actually helped...

Its a jogger's paradise out in the UBC and Kitsilano areas Julios. Tons of trails and beaches to run along and the other side of English Bay has the seawall which leads through Stanley Park. You'd definitely enjoy the lifestyle and vibe to the city. There are always cultural events, art exhibits, free lectures at the universities, and a really good music scene.
