What does 'quantum supremacy' actually mean?

Post by Whiskey 7 »

Google says it's achieved 'quantum supremacy'. What does this actually mean?

Google says one of its quantum computers has been able to solve a problem that would be practically impossible to do on a conventional computer, becoming the first to achieve so-called "quantum supremacy". Using a processor with programmable superconducting qubits, the Google team was able to run a computation in 200 seconds that they estimated the fastest supercomputer in the world would take 10,000 years to complete.

Interesting read perhaps but what is this 'quantum supremacy' all about? Discuss.

The thing about quantum computing is that it will be a very powerful tool in very specific scenarios. There currently is no faster single threaded processor than modern day GPU's. Not my wisdom. Ask John Carmack. Or better yet, let Joe Rogan ask Carmack in his podcast :)

Also, what Google has done here is find a problem for a solution, rather than solving a pre-existing problem with a new solution. In other words, this isn't worth as much as the headline and intro blurb makes it out to be.

didn't Deepak Chopra achieve Quantum Supremacy™ years ago? :|

Yep. This is why I'm holding off upgrading my p.c.
