Any bike is a fine first bike, I've never understood this argument. It's all about self control.

Edit: As long as the bike isn't physically too big for you.
LOL, right mate.

SOAP, get a GSX-R 1000 and see how long you last.

To big of a bike.. im not stupid by any means.. i know my limits and for a first street bike, itll be a 600, 750 TOPS..

The idea of a light bike is nice, so yeah..
[size=75][i]I once had a glass of milk.

It curdled, and then I couldn't drink it. So I mixed it with some water, and it was alright again.

I am now sick.

Just keep in mind that current 600s are putting down around 100hp at the rear wheel, which is more than the 1000s of the mid-90s.

Ninja EX500, CBR 600F3, FZR600, etc, all good bikes to start on. As inolen said, it's all about common sense and judicious throttle application. However, I recently talked a friend with no riding experience out of buying an R1. Reason being that given his lack of seat time, he's FAR more likely to grab a handful of throttle at exactly the wrong time. The problems don't arise when everything is going smoothly, they happen when things go south and you have no trained reactions on which to rely. The fix for this is not to put yourself in situations where the back tire tries to pass the front.

Read Keith Code's books.

Another example is a friend of mine with a 750. He over took past a truck as the road dipped. Not a problem in a car but on a bike when the you hit that dip with the power down the front will shoot up. How he stopped on the bike is beyond me.

edit: oh yeah, that 750 was his first bike.

You seriously think someone who has only ever driven a field bike could jump on a gsxr1000 and not come off?

Do you guys not have an equivalent to our motorcycle safety course? You can take them on their bikes, or your bike here in the states. Thats how I learned to ride. After that, yea, I'd say it's very possible. A GSX-R 1000 can go just as slow as a bandit :P

Yeah we do a CBT, then you can drive what you like but most bike shops won't sell a big road bike to someone who has just passed. I know what you and NS are saying but I also know any slip on the throttle on a big bike could mean a fall.
