Another aspect of drugs to consider is the effect they have upon people's thinking patterns.
Alcohol is a perfect drug - it renders the populace submissive and uncritical. You don't have much "out of the box" thinking with alcohol (typically). Alcohol inspires trust, as opposed to paranoia, which is why it is a great tool for business deals and the like.
Marijuana and LSD, on the other hand, are quite a different story.
Now i'm not saying that some gov't agent figured this out and made a law that made alcohol illegal and marijuana illegal - it's just the way the situation evolved imo.

Government can't control its production, so no money for them. I'm no fan of marijuana personally, but it is utter hypocrisy to have these ad campaigns making it look like it is crack while at the same time inundating us with ads for beer. Which 'drug' has destroyed more lives and families?
So, I say legalize it...hell, legalize everything. Help combat the street gang problem.

Pot is illegal cause it is a threat to the control this government has on its people.
Jules pretty much hit it on the nail. Alcohol is legal cause people need something to make their mundane and pointless lives ( just a certain sect ) tolerable. People need a break, i mean if i work in a factory and dont like my job and my life isnt where i want it, then beer and the like are perfect cause it gets me through each day.
Pot however will bring about a different thought process. If i dont like my life and smoke a lot of pot, i dream of a better way and get sick of living the way i am cause i see a better path and will bring forth a personal revolution that might just spread to the people that know me. Though to be very clear, pot is not required for a revolutionary mindset, but i find it makes me analytical and in turn look for change a lil more then when i dont.
Life in america is a series of bait and switches, a existence that is built upon a ignoranance is bliss mindset. Walk with me a second.
When you grow up, your told that life is about finding your love, getting a good job, going to collage and retiring.
Lets look at collage. A good collage is about 20k a year, im talking a solid education, so right off the starting line your about 80k in the hole if your aspiring to persue a serious and long lasting career. Your already in dept through school, credit cards and the like by the time your 20-22, as hole so deep that while its not impossible to get out of, will take many many years, during which time your life style will change to adjust.
Once you get out of school you instinctivly look for a house, a car, a wife and kids to take your mind off the bills and the life you cant escape now.
So now your trapped and the only way to cope is to adjust to the situation which means settling down, giving up your dreams not caring about the changes and policies of your government cause 1 thing matters to you and thats your family. You and your kids and wife, as long as your ok, deep down, you dont care about anything else on and serious level. Sure you seperate the plastics and paper but to do anything that really changes anything and takes effort you simply cant, your working 40 hours a week, being a good provider and father/mother for your childeren and doing what matters to you. You have fallen into the paht laid out for you and will never escape without drastic changes.
You see, i find that in america atleast, we are of the net. When i say NET, i mean that we cluster together in groups of realities that validate our existance in our own minds so we feel we are real, exist and know whats going on. We shun anything not like us cause if it challanges us, its threatening our reality which is a scarey and potential destructive presence.
I feel the human should be a individual, a person with their own ideals, that doesnt settle for what the herd thinks and will challange a idea that doesnt not comply with their reality. But not challange it in a destructive confrontational way, but in a debated and open minded way, the strongest idea is the most valid cause it has been proven and though out and intelligently thought about, not cause president bush gets on the TV and talks to you in a demeaning way, as if your childeren that need to be scorned for questioning things he says. You ever notice that about bush? When bush is challanged he will talk to you like your stupid for ever thinking he could be wrong, with his cocky tone and swager in his voice. This is a form a mind control to have a leader talking to his people in this manner, especialy cause of the drug topic which started this flow of words.
Let them drink, let them become docile and give them the carrots that will make them pull the cart to the place we desire. Give the mule pot and he is more likely to kick the carrige and try to run and be free.
The day when america is a collection of individials that make choices for the direction of the country instead of various herds afraid to challange a idea cause they will be different, is the day we will truly begin to be free.
