which udma mode for rom drive?

Post by shiv4 »

Hi,

I just fixed that problem with XP switching a CD/DVD drive from DMA down to PIO mode, if 6 CRC or other disc errors had happened. To those who don't know about it: DVD playback becomes chunky, audio stutters ugly and ripping leads to freeze XP completely.

Both of my disc drives (rom and burner) are plugged to the secondary ide channel and when I found the problem in the device manager (IDE ATA/Atapi Controller > Secondary IDE > Properties) the burner was set to UDMA mode 5, (but I'm not sure about this anymore), while the DVD drive was down on PIO.

After I fixed that shit the DVD drive was back on DMA mode, BUT now the device manager tells me both of the drives are running on UDMA 2 - huh?
As I said, I'm not sure anymore, but I think the burner was on UDMA 5 before, like the HDD on IDE1.

I don't have a clue, if UDMA 2 makes a real difference to 5 or what a normal UDMA speed should be. So I would be glad if anyone could look up his "mode" or just tell me if I could leave it like that.

My DVD RW and one HD are set on UDMA 2. The other 2 HDs are running on 5. Hmmm. I may need to fix that too.

So you think the DVD RW should run on UDMA 5?

Not real sure. But mine seems to take a little too long to access when I put a disc in. I'm gonna do a little research and find out what mode they should run on.

From what I can tell so far the DVD drives only support up to UDMA mode 2. So I guess it's normal.
