My dog is being put down on Monday...

Post by Transient »

He's a 13 year old black lab. He's in a lot of pain, I can tell. He struggles to breathe, and his back legs give out on him a lot. The arthritis is really bad in his joints. The vet told us that labs don't really show their pain much (don't wimper or anything) compared to little dogs, so what little we can see can be assumed to only be a fraction of the pain he's in. :tear:

Last year we built a ramp leading to the back yard, because it hurt him too much to use the stairs. He doesn't even like taking the little step off the end of the ramp. Heh, he never learned how to walk on stairs one step at a time, he just bounds up/down them 2 stairs at a time in a hopping manner.

So anyway, on Monday we're taking him to the vet's office and they're going to give him a shot. They said he will fall asleep 5 minutes after the shot, so he will finally be able to really rest. My mother is out of town with relatives, and gets really emotional when talking to my father about euthanizing Jake. She said she didn't want to be around when we put him down, so dad's doing it now. He's not going to call her because he doesn't want to ruin her trip.

Here are some pictures of Jake from 2 or 3 years back, when we first moved into our new house. The first one is of him downstairs in my room (he doesn't come down here anymore, though, because of the stairs, which he's afraid of). The second one is of him in the sunroom, looking at a doggie treat in my hand. :)

You can obviously see the white beard he's got there. Well, there's a lot more now (on his paws, under his chin, between his eyes, etc). It looks neat if you ask me. I've never really seen a dog with a white beard. :D

I'm just about to the same point with my Rottie, for the exact same reason. We're just trying to decide when to do it.
We can get him expensive shots and pills, but what really sucks is that none of it will fix him. This utterly fucking blows. Sorry Trans.

At least he'll get all the fire hydrants he can handle up in doggie heaven. :)

I still occasionally see my black lab sitting ontop of the stairs when i come home from uni (my college flat is set up the same as my old house) and he died a couple of years ago. He had a dog version of diabetes

Thanks guys. He's a good dog. I grew up with him, really. He came with us through 3 separate moves (PA to NH to VT), and made it a lot easier on me. I'll miss him, but none of us expected him to live past 11, so I've had 2 hears to prepare for this. :/

Friends of mine had such a lab, too. Until last year. Same age, same shitty disease with her backlegs, same end.

Sorry, man

no shit....

perhaps by the tone of these posts you might have realised that some people actually form some sort of emotional attachment towards their dogs.

i would be the perfect example, i spend a fortune on my dogs vet bills and would cry like a pussy if one of them died, however if you were to post that you or a close member of your family was dying from a slow and painful illness, I wouldnt give a shit.

That's like comparing apples and box cars.

Ya, I know when I die I'm getting cremated. It's bullshit if you ask me. Paying such an insane amount of money for a casket and service and shit. Even cremation shouldn't cost anything. Fuck, just put me on a barge and dump me out at sea, LOL.

But yeah, will probably cremate Jake. :sniff:
