Wasn't the reserve originally created to fight against the tyranny of government (if it become necessary)?

No. The National Guard though, was intended to be our local military for the states' protection. I think it was partially due to the posse comitatus act, which prevents the military from operating inside our borders (which is being blurred already).

Essentially though, the Guard was to protect the states from any sort of threat that might be inside our borders -- not from the government per se. It's pretty twisted that they are being sent overseas to fight wars, but everybody today just thinks of them as another arm of the military, more-or-less.

The Reserve actually IS supposed to be there to support the army, in case they are short on troops or something happens and they are needed to be called for duty.

Again though, they are being misused as well IMO, because they were intended as last-resort reserves. Today it almost seems like Bush/Rumsfeld planned on sending them over to begin with.
